I was just wondering if anybody can guesstimate the percentage of fat/cals/carbs that are NOT absorbed because of the bypass of our intestine???  I just keep forgetting to ask my dr......

I guess given the fact that no one has been able to post a reply to your question, it's a difficult one to answer - best deferred to your doctor...and let us know what you find out! Best, Maureen

This is purely anecdotal, but when we would debate this issue with our surgeon, his general advice was to consider that everything is absorbed-- that way, when the villi multiply (as they do) over time, and your absorption returns more closely to normal, you will be on an eating track that will not promote weight gain. But, that being said, I think that most estimates are about 20% non-absorption of calories in the first year, which gradually returns to nearly 100% after about 2 years.  As for carbohydrates, given the number of receptors for carbs which we have, I found that my tipping point for losing/not-losing was the same after surgery as it had been before surgery when I would go on Atkins.

THANKS STEVE!!  Ahhhhhh  Atkins...It will be so much easier to follow now!!  As a matter of fact, I had one ketostick left when I came home from the hospital.....on day 9 after the surgery, I was curious and used it....holy moly....off the charts!!!  We are in MAJOR ketosis!!!!!  Good to hear from you my friend!!
