Will I be able to get a private room at the hospital?  And will a family member be able to stay overnight with me? Thank you

In general, most insurance companies will not pay for a private room.  There are a couple privates on the 4th floor (where you'll be post op) and one is huge (I was lucky and got that one cause there were no other doubles available, but, it was dark and very hot in that room)...If you want to pay the difference from what ins will pay, I'm sure you can reserve a private room and ask for a cot to be brought in. The other private rooms are very, very tiny.  You'd want to ask for the first one at the bottom of the hall as you come off the elevator.  You may want to ask admissions to reserve it for you when you know your surgery date. Or ask Lois to ask for you... Why do you need someone to stay with you?  You'd get much better care and recovery there alone, letting the nurses help you and getting up and walking a lot. Paula

Hi- I just got home from the hosp today- I had a private room- I didnt ask for it- I just got it.  It was hot in there but I put the AC on and it was fine.  Yes, you can usually have 1 person stay overnight with you if you want.  The girls on north 4 were absolutely fabulous- I cant say enough about them!!
Highest (MAY 2007)-269.  Pre-Op- 240.  Goal- 138-ish.

Hi, I had a private room without requesting it.  It was small but I still preferred it to sharing.  Don't know about staying over.  I thought about it but decided against it before surgery. Jen

Hi,  I had a private room without asking for one.  I really wanted my husband to stay over night with me, I have never been alone in the hospital before but the nurse said no, that he should go home and he was right.  The nurse (who was a male) took such good care of me that I felt safe and comfortable all night.  It was funny but I looked forward to the nights because he was such a nice guy and it seemed like at night the nurses had a bit more time to spend with me. (not to say that the day nurses werent fab. too, they were!!! ) Hugs Tracy

I had a private room.  didn't ask for it.  Loved it.

As far as having someone there with you...I know my first couple of nights I didn't even care if someone was with me because I was so doped up on the morphine.  I had people visit me that still to this day don't remember them being there.  And I had conversations with these people!  You can ask if you can have someone stay with you, I am not sure what the policy is.  Good luck with everything!
