Hi there,
After attending 2 education sessions (1 year apart), with Dr. Aranow, I feel confident that he is the doctor for me. I made an appointment to see him at the end of June and will start attending the support groups and am making my appointments with others. I am new to OH and I was wondering, if any of Dr. Aranow's patients out there have any feedback from the surgery (he does not want to do laproscopic bypass anymore, he only does the bad, or the RNY). I was at another doctor's office yesterday, and the a patient of another dr. there said the worst things about Dr. Aranow. Couldn't believe it. He impressed me as someone who knows what they're talking about, and who has the experience to prove it. I hope, I trust, I am correct, but any opinions you have, good or bad, would love to hear abou them. Thanks!
You know what Elvine....every single person thinks that 'their doctor' is the absolute best...You cannot go by somebody else's opinion...what facts did they have to back them up?? You have to go with whomever you are comfortable with...you obviously have done your research.....have you 'checked out' the other doctors available?? Do you prefer to have laparascopic surgery (less risk of infection, quicker recovery, less pain)? If so, then I think Dr. A will do lap....he just says that he doesn't prefer to do it this way because he needs another doctor to help him with the surgery....yes, those were his words....I went to his 'presentation'............I am using a different doctor so obviously I am biased....but you have to go with your gut...your head...and your heart..............good luck and keep us posted!!
I love Dr. Aranow. Oh course I am biased since he did me and I am more than pleased with him and with my results. I did a lot of research on docs in and around Connecticut and I really looked for someone that I could put my trust in. I liked him so much that I drove 1/2 way across the state to have my surgery.
That being said, he is not the guy for everyone. You need to feel totally comfortable with whoever you chose. Unless you are uncomfortable with someone, hold out for a face to face meeting before you make final decision.
I had an open RNY - he went down my existing gall bladder scar so I have one that is only a little bit bigger than what was there before. His explanation to me was that he prefers the open since he can insure that everything is neat and tidy (my words) - no leaks, kinks, etc.
I spent 3 days in the hospital, 3 weeks out of work, and now am in better shape than I've been in the past 20 + years.
Welcome to the Board. This is a great group and while we don't always agree with each other, we all help each other.

Dr. Aranow did my surgery 1 year ago. I have complete faith in him. I have lost just over 100 lbs and have had surgery for a hernia 2 weeks ago. My question is has anyone had problems loosing too much weight? I never though I would say this but I think I've lost enough and I am eating, but I keep loosing.
Elvine,
My husband and I both have had Dr Aranow do our open RNY's and we could not have been happier with him. He is strict, goes by the book and he'll be the first to tell you so. It's his way or the highway! But, that's good for us.
I think that people think he's arrogant, I say confident...he's earned every bit of it. He's done SO many of these surgeries that they are routine for him now.
I'd trust him with my own children and have every confidence in him, his staff and Middlesex Hosp.
Good luck with your journey. Feel free to ask any questions here, we'll all be willing to help.
Don't worry about what others say. THere's always one or two that have had a bad experience with a surgeon and/or their personalities. Not every surgeon is right for everyone.
I think you made a wise choice, though!

Hi,
I love Dr. Aranow, but I will tell you he was not my first choice. I had almost finished the process with another dr and hospital. Then enter my best friend who had surgery with Dr. A. and had been not so happy with my choice of dr from the beginning. She gave me some info. about the dr I had chose that made me uncomfortable and then helped me get a quick appt with Dr. A. I never had any doubts about him or any of his staff. I have found him to be confident, caring, and very knowledgable. What makes the difference for me is the aftercare, he is always available for questions or concerns.
Whoever you choose just make sure that you feel completely comfortable with that person. If you get that little nagging voice with doubts, then find someone new.
Good luck,
Tracy
Wish I could have been a fly on the wall during the Dr. A. bashing...he'd have me to answer to! Listen, you have to do your homework, research, and ultimately follow your heart or your gut or whatever instincts you have, based on making the most informed decision possible. As for me and my experience, I can only shout it from the rooftops - Dr. Aranow is one of the best surgeons doing this surgery in the country. This is my completely unbiased opinion of the man, despite that he is my surgeon. I would say so otherwise. Best of luck! M.
It really depends on what TYPE of surgery that you want. If you really have your heart set on laproscopic rny then Dr. Aranow is not the surgeon for you. If you don't have that preference then Dr. Aranow is a very good surgeon and a great choice. Obviously, he has lots of fans on this site.
For me personally, I wanted laproscopic rny so Dr. Aranow was not an option so I just traveled a 1/2 hour further to Yale for Dr. Bell and I could not have been happier with my choice. He's very experienced with lap rny surgery and starts all his surgeries as lap. The only exceptions are if a patient has two much scar tissue in the way from previous abdominal surgeries. He said he's only had to go that route with 2 patients.
It's really your choice alone to decide and be comfortable with the type of surgery you want and the surgeon you want.
