Post Surgical Hair Loss
Hey there,
It is not a "rule" that hair falls out or even thins out (Thank GOD). In my experience and opinion, in order to try to prevent this from happening is to get in all of your protein and vitamins. It could happen anyway due to the trauma of surgery, but it seems the protein thing really helps. I also take Biotin because I am very vain and can't fathom the thought of my hair falling out!!!
It has not happened to me yet as I am only 1.5 weeks post op, but the folks on this board are very knowledgeable and helpful.
Good Luck!!!
Sue
Post surgical hair loss is more common than not. Mine started around 6 months post op and lasted till about 10 months. You really can't do much to prevent it but you can do things to help slow it down like trying Nioxin products and getting a layered cut to help give you the illusion of thicker hair. It does stop and it will grow back. You might be one of the lucky few that don't have hair loss... but I would prepair for it because it is very common.

Chrissy
Hi Michele,
NICE NAME!
I have heard that getting in all of your protein (60-80g) per day really helps to not have hair loss, but I don't know if that has been scientifically proven. Sometimes I think that it just depends on the person - I don't know if you can really do anything to prevent hair loss, but I assume that it's better to be healthy and getting in all your protein and vitamins than to not be...

From my own experience I started losing a little hair between 4-6 months post op even though I had adequate protien and vitamins. After that it stopped and the loss was not enough for anyone to notice since I have thick hair to begin with. I lost much, much more after a severe illness several years ago. That being said it grew back just as thick and was even a little wavy afterwards.
So don't panic, it will grow back. Good protien intake 60-80 grams a day will help.

First of all.....We have a Michelle Ma Belle on here from CT and I think with your new nick, people are going to get confused..
With that out of the way....If, and only IF, you get in ALL of your protein on a daily basis before and after surgery and take all of your vitamins will the hair loss be minimal.
I didn't have any problems with getting all or more of my protein in right from the get go, so, I was lucky and didn't lose a strand of hair. I also took my vitamins daily...
Some have problems getting in their protein because they don't like how it tastes or for whatever reason and if you don't get in at least 65gms every day, you're bound to lose hair.
Don't worry about it. It does grow back! It always does!
