Julio/anyone else: do you still supplement your protein??
Hi Julio et al,
Bevi here....
To julio: I love that you post your meal plan daily... I read every day, and it's really kind of a primer for me.
I have a question for you...and for anyone else who can offer some advise/guidance.
Do you supplement with protein, or do you find you are able to get your daily proteins in via the foods you eat...?
I am almost 6 weeks out....but my doctor has cleared me to try anything, and see what i can tolerate.
I know i am not far enough out to get all my proteins from the foods i eat yet... but i am wondering how this works for others... and how long it took/takes to be able to not depend on supps.
thank you kindly, in advance,
Bevi
Hi Bevi,
I'm about 20 months out and find that I will grab a Detour protein bar when I know that I won't meet my protein requirements that day. It gives me 15gms of protein.
Also, sometimes in the evening I can tell if I've not gotten enough protein in (I'm lax at keeping a log) so I'll make either a shake or unflavored Unjury in broth for a boost.
It's not often, but I can feel that I've not gotten in enough protein.
Sometimes, also, I get a low blood sugar drop and I'll get the shakes...I'll then have a cheese stick or two to calm things down.
I do try to get in all of my protein (which has never been a problem, just on rushed days or times when I'm not feeling all that great) by regular food, and you will find, in time, that you can get it in, too. Just make sure you cut it up in bite sized pieces and eat it SLOWLY...that's the key to getting it to go down and staying down. Then eat the veggie and a bit of carbs...
Hang in there..it's all so new and you'll get the drill soon enough!

For me, I had my greatest weight loss results when I was maintaining at least 80 grams of proten per day and about 24 grams of carbs per day. I had no choice but to supplement (the Isopure Zero Carb drinks and Worldwide Protein shakes in the cans). After a few months, I started using the bars (for me, I opt for bars with no added sugar and as low in carbs as possible).
All the studies indicate that we lose the fastest when keeping protein high (at least above 60 grams per day) and carb intake low (to less than 30 grams a day which differs for us all).
Hi Julio - I notice you've changed your thumbnail photo a few times recently. Can you tell me how to do this please? This photo is very outdated of me - taken at about 1 year out of surgery. I'm 3.5 years out now and don't really look too much like this anymore, would love to change my photo! Thanks. Maureen
Almost 3 yrs out and I still daily supplement with a protein shake.
I am now using the Isopure Meal Replacement (Vanilla is good, can add any flavor to it).
I find it works better for me.
I simply cannot get enough protein in and keep the calorie count down.
And it helps keep the hunger at bay.
Me? I will always depend upon supplementing my nutritional intake.
I agree with Steve... keeping the protein up works well.
Good luck.
