I have the date for my Lap Band surgery.
I got my approval letter from the insurance yesterday and talked to Lois today. I'm going May 21st. I've lost 20 lbs since seeing the nutritionist in Jan. I'm going to try for another 5lbs., at least, before my surgery. The arthritis is feeling better already. Can't wait to get going and not have to take meds. for diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and use a cpap machine. But most of all I want to run around with my grandkids. I am what I consider a young grandma at age 53 and want to have fun!!!
I have a question for the lap banders. I'm a little concerned with the reports I hear about lap banders not to expect losing as much as RNY patients and more likelihood to gain the weight back. I am very motivated and I guess that is what counts. I'm at 260 right now. When I saw Dr. Aranow I was at 280 and he told me to expect a loss of 100 lbs. Can I hear from lap banders please. A good weight for me would be around 150 lbs. Do you think I can make it?
Looking forward to being a loser like the rest of you.

hi, bev i had my band on 11/28/06 i have lost 35 yes it is slow but as any dr will tell you that is better it gives your skin a chance to mold better to your new loss we sound a lot a like iam 52 with a new hubby and i have 6 grands my beginning wt was 242now iam 207 do not get over anouzis about it take one day at a time my email is [email protected] if you ever wanto chat good luck deb
Congratulations!
Lap banders can lose as much RNY but not as quickly - statistically both surgery types end up in about the same place in 3 years. I've never heard more likelihood to gain the weight back - both surgeries require you to change your life style - neither is a quick fix - with the RNY you get your loss quickly and have to change your life style in order to keep the loss off - with lap band you have to change your life styleto get (and keep) the weight off - you don't get off the hook with either choice - too bad there isn't a magic solution anywhere..........
If you stay motivated there is no reason in the world why you can't get to your goal!
I am losing extremely slow with the band - I don't think I'm typical - you can see a wide sprectrum of results if you check out the lap band forum - there are people there who have lost as quickly as a RNY patient and others who are struggling (like me).
Best of luck on your journey!
Tammy
I know it is all up to me and the lap band is just a tool. But I have lost loads of weight before - 50/60 lbs. and then gained it all back. What is it really like to see the psychologist? Would they really be able to help me figure out why I do this to myself? I have never eaten because of hunger. But when I do want something and I've stopped myself to try and analyze why I want to eat - I come up with nothing except I like the taste. I would consider going to the psychologist if I knew it would help. To tell you the truth, I am scared of gaining again after the lap band.
You are all wonderful with sharing your knowledge, experience and support. Thanks so much.
