Fear of Surgery

Hi all, I'm a few weeks off from surgery and have decided to change from lap band to by pass but I'm having anxiety attacks everytime I think about being on the operating table. I worry about waking up during the surgery. I'm also concerned about how long I'll be away from wor****ep hearing different estimates. The one thing I don't doubt is that I'll be able to stay with the program. Well-that's the rambling that's going through my head.

hi there pincus b, it's natural to have anxiety over surgery.i don't know your doc but i had dr.aranow and believe me they knock you out cold.you are woken up 3 hrs. after to take a walk.it seems most people take 2 weeks to work.i had bypass done about 6 mon ago and never regretted it. wait 'til you start feeling more energy from loss of weight not to mention diminished physical pain.i know you'll do great so hang in there and best of luck. joni

Hi Pincus B, Most everyone has some fear of surgery. That's normal, try not to dwell on those fears. Try focusing on how your life will change, all the positive outcomes that will be coming your way, like improved health and increased energy. Also all the things that you will be able to do that you have a hard time doing now or can't even do now. Think of how you will be able to get a new wardrobe, and feel better about yourself. About going back to work, it could depend on the type of work you do, your doctor should be able to help you determine when you can resume working. I did not have to worry about that issue but, by two weeks out I was back to my normal activities. Things you have to keep in mind is being able to get your fluids in and your nutritional requirements as your diet changes. Also if your have a physical job you may have some restrictions initially regarding amount of weight you can lift. Also remember you will be recovering from major surgery and need to get enough rest to heal completely, along with getting in your exercise when you start that. Be sure you get up and start walking as soon as allowed after surgery, that will help your recovery and prevent post op complications. Best of luck Sher
