10 days to go!

Someone asked me yesterday if I was afraid...but I told her that I was mostly just excited. I feel that with all the preparation and education along the journey, that there isn't much "unknown" to fear. I mean, I expect pain, and I guess you can't really know what that will be like until you're there...but I know pretty much everything to expect. Really, the only thing I am very nervous about is getting through a week of drinking "Impact Recovery" three times a day. That stuff smells so awful and tastes just plain nasty. I guess if I put in enough tequila it will be okay, huh? Well, anyway, now I am finally counting down! My hubby thought he would be sooooo funny and say "gee, wouldn't it be funny if the doc had to cancel your surgery 'cuz you were pregnant?" I didn't find such a thought even the slightest bit amusing! In fact, now I guess I will worry about that, though at almost 45 with a history of fertility issues and miscarriage, I don't suppose it is any real threat...but I just told him if he thought such an idea was so funny, then he would think enforced celibacy until after surgery and recovery was downright hysterical! HE thought I was joking!! hah! I already called my gyn to make arrangements for birth control! I already have a 24 yr old daughter, a 22 yr old son, and an 8 yr old son. I am not ABOUT to start a third round of parenting at this late date! I want to look forward to life someday without paying for daycare! My husband thinks I am too worried about getting pregnant after, but I am not taking any chances! Well, I'll be lurking and will drop a post here and there as I get closer to D-day! (Delivery from fathood!)

That impact advanced recovery is totally and completely disgusting! There was no way in hell that I was going to drink that crap - I simply could not choke it down - I ended up drinking boost or instant breakfast. If you can stand that stuff it's supposed to be really good for recovery after the surgery - so best of luck to you with that Best of luck to you! Tammy

Hello Kimberly, Have you talked with the nutritionist about how you find the impact recovery so nasty, I don't know if they have a substitution or not but it would be worth asking. It is important though to try your best drinking it, it will help decrease the size of your liver and make the surgery easier. It is only one week out of your life and then you will be on your way to a new you. It is good you are planning on using some birth control afterwards. Some woman are able to become pregnant easier than when they were over weight; so if that is something you don't want to happen it is good to be cautious. Being anxious and nervous about what you will be going through is entirely normal. You will be embarking on a journey towards wellness and will have a new tool to help you lose weight. Let us know when you are scheduled for surgery and feel free to ask any questions. You will soon be on the losers bench. Take care.... Sher

RNY on 12/28/05 with
Seriously, many women experience changes hormonally after RNY surgery from the rapid weight loss- an accidental pregnancy could happen.....I say make hubby get a vasectomy while you get your RNY.....or at least make him wrap that rascal. I wouldn't necessarily trust oral birth control- given the issues with hormonal changes it could be ineffective. I laughed my ass off when they handed me the cup for the urine test in the pre-op- I said if it came back positive that Dr Aranow would still have to operate- only it would be to remove my foot from my husband's butt. He had a vasectomy after child number four. (the darlings are 10, 9, 6 and 5 now)
