Low blood sugar..AGAIN
So, I had bee doing pretty good the last week or so...got back on track, been drinking, cut out the junk for the most part,
Here is what I had today
B..3 steak tips, one egg over easy
Coffee
S..banana
L..2 light yogurts
S..crackers
D..white borsch soup with kielbasa
drank lots of decaf iced tea all day, felt really good...until about 2 hours after dinner, was at the grocery store, started getting really shaky and light-headed,omg, my hands were shaking to hard it was scary!!!
So I had about 4 candy-covered peanuts, the first thing i could grab at the register, and about 2 handfuls of quaker cereal with brown sugar...and the shaking went away, I felt much better, and the sugar sure helped...I then ate about a handful of walnuts when I got home, because at this point I am worrried about the drop in blood sugar that could happen after the ""treatment""...Sooo, I usually can tell exactly why my sugar drops, but today I am stumped...I had the snacks between the meals, like I am supposed to, did not go too long between meals, had enough protein spaced throughout the day (although the snacks were carby, but that's what usually keeps me from getting the "shakes")...so,,,,any deas??? what am I missing ?
About this time last year I had a couple of really scary episodes where I actually passed out from the hypo-glycemia, so I have been making sure not to get to that point again...so today was really scary, since I have no idea what caused it....
Hi Dorota,
Just wondering if you exercised longer than normal today or yesterday. As a diabetic, i know that sometimes you don't eat enough to make up for the extra exercise and it can affect (effect? - never get them correct!!), me the next day. I also have huge drops right before my cycle which I have found is very common for diabetics. Those are the only 2 things I can think of.
I hope you find out what is going on. I remember those days of shaking - my insides were even shaking. I have had diabetes so long now that I don't even realize my sugar is low until I am in the low 50's or 40's. It's actually pretty scary although I can definietly tell I need something at that point.
If you really want the shakes to go away faster, drink some apple juice (or orange juice). The liquid gets right into your blood stream unlike food that has to digest before it gets to you so you end up over eating (or at least I used to).
Let me know how things go.
My best,
Nancy K
I did go jogging instead of the usual walk....maybe the culprit...I dont know...i havent really had an episode for a while ,so wasnt really expecting it and was not prepared....
i am not diabetic, but have had hypoglycemia for a while, even before the surgery,,,it's just gotten worse since WLS......One of MY side-effects...
oh well...thanks for the input.......
Love, Dorota
now that i'm almost 3 years out i dont' get the drop in blood sugar as much as i use to but those are really scarey.
i have found that if i am under alot of stress i will get them. even with watching what i'm eating every day, my job is very stressful so i keep aware of what is happening. even though i'm careful its the ones that happen without any warning that freak me out! especailly when i'm someplace where no one knows me. of course the worring about it brings it on! hahaha so what i do is carry some raisins with me. they give me the boost then i find me soemthing protein so that it keeps that blood sugar up. the sugar in the raisins isn't going to hold me like the protein does. thats why i combine the two.
Hi Dorota,
Could it be your body is expecting the certain amount of carbs/sugar that you were feeding it over the holidays and now is going through a bit of withdrawl that you've cut it out?
I had the same exact thing happen to me the other day...feeling fine, then shaking like there was no tomorrow. It is scary.
Have you been in to see Liz, the nut. at Dr A's lately? Maybe she can offer some advice.
Keep doing what you're doing and I think your body will flush out the crap and you'll feel better...
Paula
I've talked to liz before about this,,,sheis the reason I have increased my carb intake...and it has helped...but your idea makes sense...I have been having much more sugar than usual lately, maybe my body was expecting it...normally i eat no refined sugar whatso-ever, so the holidays were different for sure.......but am cutting out the crap...YES M'AM.......
Love ya,
Miss ya
Hi Dorota,
I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but maybe the 2 light yogurts were the culprit. I don't know which kind you had, but the one with the lowest carbs that I've found is the Dannon Light & Fit (not listed below) - only 10g carbs per serving (6 oz) for the blackberry.
Also, how far apart did you place your snacks/lunch? Maybe too many carbs (bananas are around 30g)
I'm diabetic, but I really couldn't tell you for sure what happened because I haven't had the surgery yet, but as a diabetic I know that if I eat too many carbs, I crash and feel really shaky. I agree with Paula that Liz would probably be able to help you out. Good luck! The shakes are not fun.

you know,,, I am not doing low-carb, and dont usually have a problem with yogurts, but you could have a point......I will double-check the amount of sugars.....Oh...I did differently today, and brought protein bars to work, and had those for snack.....in the end I just have to remember to be on my "toes", this wls thing changed my system forever, and whenever i get too complacent, it "kicks my butt"...
Thanks for respnding...
