Hernia vs bad stomach virus?
I feel like I got hit in the stomach by a truck. Yesterday while rearranging my daughters' room I began to feel sick, I had nausea dizziness and intense abdominal pain - ended up in the ER on Dr Aranow's advice for a CAT scan. Spent the night- got rehydrated, some pain and nausea meds. Today I am not nauseated but the intense abdominal pain is still there along with a slight temp- 100.5 - The CAT scan showed nothing, however it was done without contrast. (either IV or oral) SO not sure how accurate THAT is. I feel best lying on my left side with my knees drawn up- a position I couldn't do a year ago- actually getting my knees to touch my boobs...LOL.
There is no noticeable bulging indicating a hernia- but man I can't touch my belly.
Those of us with Dr A as a doctor know he's off tomorrow....Dr Coatti is covering. I find Dr A's partner's to be useless. So I am throwing it out to you all- do I have a bug or a hernia that didn't show on CAT scan last night?
I'm with Julio... no hernia experience.
But... there are so many viruses going around.
I keep gettting sick all over again... simply cannot make this virus I have go away!
I would call and make another appt with Dr. A for when he returns.
Ok... not to make you laugh while suffering in pain...
But MoMo... you would be offering the same response I do believe from the fetal position comment you gave us...
Is it your knees that you are able to bring UP to your boobies?
or
your boobies deflated (LIKE MINE!) from the weight loss and years of gravity that are MEETING your knees!
Sorry.. you can lash me!
Seriously, I hope you feel better soon.

Hi,
Sorry that you're down and out. I think you may have a virus...Go with Dr A's advice and rest and lay low for today (while he's off). Elaine Tobin is on, isn't she? My girlfriend here in town is up in the hospital, for she had her surgery on Tuesday and she's planning on seeing her today instead of Dr A.
I think you'd be able to physically "feel" a hernia. Dr A always checks my tummy when I'm there to feel for bumps.
Are you constipated? I get physically ill when I'm constipated (with nausea and vomiting). Also, when I dump, I throw up and have diarrahea at the same time.
Follow up with him tomorrow...
Feel better.
Paula
First of all, if you were suffering from what is commonly referred to as an "internal hernia" you wouldn't feel any bulge-- this is what happens when the intestine telescopes into itself. If you are going to a CT scan to diagnose the problem, then contrast should have been used (the contrast makes it easy to spot the blockage because it abruptly stops at the point of blockage).
Secondly, the intensity of the abdominal pain (and its suddeness) also don't necessarily indicate a flu, particularly in light of only a low-grade fever.
If you can't touch the part of your abdomen where you experienced the pain that is an indication of a potential blockage.
I would strongly urge you to call whoever is on call for your surgeon and ask if they could see you. You could be experiencing a flu bug, and you certainly were fully checked out by your surgeon when he saw you in the ER, but given the potential risks of leaving a blockage untreated, I tend to ere on the side of caution.
