You know some people don't know what to say out of their mouths. Here are a few comments I can do without. lol 1. You were not that big.. Well when I was naked that was not true When you can only shop in certain store it is never a good sign When you have to roll over on your kneees to get out of the bathtub Just getting up is not an option When your coats get too small When you can't lotion your feet, it is time for a change 2. You could have lost it on your own. I embrace who I am.... the good, bad and fat. I guess that is why I kept getting bigger. How many times can one person do this? 3. I know someone who died from weight loss surgery. I know someone who died from high colesterol, car accident, heart failure, kidney failure, stroke, cancer, circordis and myloma. Lets not forget Superman's wife who died from lung cancer and never smoked. 4. You don't weigh enough for the surgery. Well anytime you weigh more than the former heavy weight champion of the world (Mike Tyson) it is never good. When you weigh more than Oprah ever weighed that is never good. Well these are just a few comments that I received this week. lol Just think they were all from people who care. So if you don't know what to say here are a few ideas. Encourage me to get my fluids and protein in daily. Clap when I clap. If you see progress say : "I am glad this tool is working for you." "Keep up the hard work, I know it is not easy." Future Comment Boy, you look so good now. ( I have not rec. this one yet.) Did I look that bad before? Weight Check Nov. 1 ....272-274 Dec.12 ...258.5 Dec. 25...248.5

Hey, you probably do look so good now....doesnt mean you didnt before..... People sometimes just dont know what to say to us...I got a lot of "you dint look big enough"...well, i was 150 lbs overweight...so am pretty sure i did "look big enough" i get a lot of dropped jaws now when people find out I lost 150 pounds...they just cant "picture" it...once again I get somey pretty "swell" comments, such as :" no you didnt"...(duh on that one..why would i say it if i didnt ??nobody would willingly admit to weighing 150 pounds more than they do now if it wasnt true) Whatever...just take it all with a grain of salt...most likely it was meant as a sincere compliment that just "came out wrong"... Enjoy the Journey....

From my nephew after seeing me on Eyewitness News last week (he's 12) "Gee Aunt Bernadette you sure look a lot better than you did before the surgery" Thanks kid. Where'd I put that receipt for your Christmas present?

Hi Joann, Your right about some of the "Odd" and in some cases just "Insensetive" comments some people make. The Important thing to remember that we go onthis "Journey" for "US". To take control of our lives and our health so we can be around to enjoy the company of the others in our lives. Even the one's who don't chose their words to carefully. You are still the same soul you were before surgery and never forget that! Take Care and have a "Great Day"

i've heard all of them too. threes week after my surgery when I returned to my work place where no one knew what i had had done they only knew i was out for a few weeks, i bumped into one of my heavy co-workers. at that point i'd dropped (after just 3 weeks!) 30 pounds. it was noticeable she asked me what diet i had been on cause i looked good. i told her i had wls. she was appalled! she told me that was crazy to do she'd never do that and went on and on about it. i just smiled casue i knew that she'd eventually be back to ask me who i went to...she did! and she has had the surgery and looks absolutley fantastically wonderful!!!!! i dont know how much she has lost its been over a year now for her and she has had her TT. she is smaller than me and could just be the post person for our doctor! alot of our heavy friends or family when they find out what we had have done react in similar ways. but they watch us to see what we eat and what happens to us. there is still lot of people who just do not know. once they see they get even more curious. i know thats how i was when another co-worker had her surgery. doing that helped me to take that next step to my healthier life. now i meet people who only know me as the way i am now. the old family and friends have gotten use to me now too. its rare when i bump into someone who didn't know or who hasn't seen me in a long time. when they ask how i lost the weight i tell them. its more acceptable now too becasue media has given stories wether good or bad plus there are more of us all the time people now know others who have had it done. plus there is so much on the news too of how unhealthy obesity is...duh! we've done our part to bring that obesity issue down.

Just for the record, If I had a dollar for every person that told me they knew someone who died from the surgery, I'd be very rich. Plus if that many of us died, how many would actually be left to carry on. Ok, yes Im being sarcastic. I choose to ignore comments and just know that most of it is and was of my own doing. I am at fault for being fat and will take responsibility for it. Does it define who I am, yes it does. Will I go back to it because of uninformed comments from others, NEVER. We can never know what will come out of a person's mouth, we can only control how we react. Why sabotage yourself or make yourself unhappy because of others fears, doubts or any other negative emotions. It just isn't important. My choice when people say something a little off color, is to tell them... This was a health decision, it IS difficult and NOT the easy way out and I have been blessed with no complications, I follow my doctors orders and I am becoming a healthy human being. It may not be for everyone, but I am truly happy. (and for the record, I wouldn't look so much for the encouragement in the fluids and protein thing, you'll end up with the food police when you start eating more types of foods, trust me on this one) Good luck and congratulations on your surgery!!! When I told a certain someone I wanted to have the surgery, they asked if I was big enough. I said "yes". BUT NEXT TIME...maybe I should ask THEM if they think I'm SMALL ENOUGH as I am! Deb
