Period question I went on birth control at 18 due to irregular periods. I wass getting it every 2 weeks. Then at 20 I went on Depo shots and no period for 5+ years. I went off the Depo a year ago and no period untill this past Halloween( 4 days after my RNY) It lasted 5 days and was gone, then the end of November it came again like clockwork and lasted 14 whole days!!! THEN...and this is the kicker....It came back 1 week later full force. I know that as you lose weight rapidly that you release a lot more estrogen but is that whats causing this? I am in between insurance till the 1st of the year and cant afford to go to the gyno till after then, so Im hoping for some advice!

Hi Beth, I also had an awful time getting regulated. I was on birthcontrol pills then went on Depro for around 4 years... (LOVED not having my visitor monthly back in the day!) Due to my obesity I was never on a regular schedule so the Depro helped. After my weight loss surgery (I had my tubes tied 8 years ago) I was ALLLL over the place for a good 4-5 months. Sometimes lasting 10 days. Cramps were just awful. I'll be 2 years out in April and I'm now just becoming regulated. (5 day average) give or take. It is due to the weight loss & plus your body has been through ALOT. I would give it a few more cycles & if you still are having issues call your PCP if you don't have a GNY by then. Mickey

Hi Beth, Dr Aranow says that women's periods and hormones get all messed up after WLS. He's not sure why, but he says that women that have had menopause sometimes get their periods back again! I had a procedure done in 2001 to allievate excessive bleeding and rarely had a period, but, since surgery, it's a little heavier than it was. No biggie, but it did change. Ask him about it. paula

Hi, My uneducated educated guess would be that you have PCOS and have had it pre-op but symptoms are now getting regulated due to RNY. I doubt anything is wrong... just see dr when you can Hugs, Chrissy

I was never formally diagnised with PCOS but self diagnosed shortly before surgery and did some research on it... I have a lot of the symptoms, the excessive hair (tweezers are my friends) the weight probs, irregular periods...etc, so you are probably right! Its just so weird to not have it for so long and to have it SO frequently!

I too have/had PCOS- I "cured" it with a pregnancy- followed by three more over a total of exactly 5 years from first to fourth child. Since then I have been CLOCKWORK every 34 days. NOW since the RNY they are closer to 30 days apart and more intense- heavy heavy bleeding, cramps....of course the cramps may have always been that bad but without Motrin, they really suck. It's gotta be the hormone shift from the rapid weight loss. Don't fret it- just (uhh forgive this one) "ride the tide" LMAO.....

You got me. I was going to say that it is the punctuation that goes at the end of a sentence. Again -- you got me! Scott
