Entire left side is mad Black & Blue 6 days out from open RNY
Hi Kevin,
I had open RNY also & had Black & Blues and some swelling in the incision area. It will get better with time. I found that walking as soon as I could really helped me get things moving & stretching.
It took about a month for everything to settle down in that area and the residue was a lovely shade of "pale greens & yellows" as the bruising went away. It'll pass! I was more sore than anything.
Your body has been through alot so make sure to get your fluids in, take short walks, and rest!
The bruising is part of the process...but for me it is SOOOOO worth!
Welcome to the loser's side! For once I can say I am a "loser" and proud of it!

Technically its not a black and blue like you think it is. Its not bruising like when you bang your shin.
I had Lap RNY and that night I lifted my nightgown to find my whole damn stomach was black and blue. When my doc came in the next morning I was like, what the heck did you do to me.? He explained that there are several veins that run just on top of the abdominal muscles and when he made the small incision for the instrument he cut one of those veins. Most times they don't cut one, but on occasion it happens. Its no big deal, but the blood fills up below the skin and makes it look black and blue. So unless it seems to get worse instead of better, don't worry
