Tuesday is the BIG day!
Hi Everyone! I will be having a LapBand done on Tuesday @SVMC with Dr. Floch. I AM FREAKING! Before I went to the support group I was SURE I made the right choice. But after listening to people talk about how they are constantly throwing up, or "sit next to the microwave" because they eat so slow they have to keep heating up thier food. ( I am the last person at the table now) I am the person who runs around crazy with the kids ....blah, blah, blah.. not eating but at night when the kids are out of my hair I eat EVERYTHING that is not nailed down. I am going crazy my husband isn't saying a word for fear he will upset me. My kids are just to young to "get it" I spoke to the doctors office about this and I was told "You'll need less reprogramming to eat slow" I don't think I was satisfied with that answer I want someone to tell me I am doing the right thing. I HATE THROWING UP!!
Any suggestions?
can any "banders" share the first two weeks weight loss with me?
Thank You
Kate
Hi kate! Good luck with your surg on this tues........Relax, dr floch and his brother are the best around.........I am friends with a lovely lady who had the lapbanc with Dr. Floch........In norwak, or dnby., cant remember, and she says he is excellent, and she is fussy, fussy and fussy. She has lost over 5o lbs. And I believe it is since July ......You will definitely not need any coaxing to eat slow, the thought of gagging will go into a survival mode, and you will do marvelous..Dont underestimate yourself....You ve come too far in your mindset to let a little slow chewing etc. To put a damper on your spirits.........You have made a wise choice, and she says that it is the best thing she has ever ever done for herself..........Also debbie from branford says the same thing.............But of course, I do not have a surg date as of today, but im so gung ho for it, that im not hesitating at all...........Calm down, and think about how your life will change for the even better, because you will be the person you were meant to be...................Its amazing how us women put so so much emphasis on our bodies, but sad but true....

Hi Kate,
I had Lap Band surgery on Aug.1st and if you are reading that people are throwing up (and I may be one of them!), then it is most likely because their band is overfilled, they are eating to fast or not chewing enough. It will happen, you most likely will throw up once or twice, but it is not a normal throw up. I am telling you from my experience and don't want you to be more afraid, in fact I would encourage you to ge banded.
Here is how it goes - Your food actually gets stuck and you have a feeling like a golf ball is in your chest - it hurts! Then when your food comes up, it is actually the whole piece of food not digested, so no acid taste comes up, no bad taste in your mouth and it is over. Now it can take a couple of hours or so, so you are uncomfortable for a while and then after you need to go back to liquids for your next couple of meals. The throwing up does iritate your band.
There will also be foods that you won't be able to eat - or I should say that usually there are foods you can't eat after banding. Everyone is different and my food experiences may be different then yours. I have trouble with Chicken and most beef, so right now I eat a lot of fish, ground turkey and if I am out I either have fish or Filet mignon. It's the stringing kind of meat that gives me trouble - tried pot roast, chicken, turkey, pork (but I think I will try it again). Again, this is my experience.
Through it all, i would do it again in a heartbeat and I think you too will be happy with being banded. If you want to read success - read Bette Blackwell's profile. She also uses the docs we do. She has been my advisor and has been so successful!!
Good luck in your decision and let me know if I can help you any further. Feel free to contact me!

Kate - Most people don't constantly throw up - it can happen once in a while - but it can happen once in a while with either of the surgery choices so that's just part of paying the piper for having the opportunity to have a tool by your side to help fight the battle of obesity.
They say you shouldn't eat for more then 20 minutes at a time and the portion is 1/2 to 1 cup of food - so the people who are sitting next to the microwave might be eating too slow or too much - everyone is different. Every journey is different.
Actually bandsters shouldn't be counting weight loss they have as a benefit of the band until they reach proper restriction - proper restriction is usually obtained with 3 to 5 fills for the average - some more and some less. Of course, there are always exceptions to everything. Once a person has reached the proper restriction with the band they say you can have between 1 and 2 pounds per week loss - of course - depending on your choices and exercise level this average can be higher or lower.
Neither surgery choice is full proof - both have pro's and con's.
I hate throwing up too - trust me - it sucks - I know many people with the RNY who have thrown-up and many with the band who have too - both surgeries have this as a con unfortunately - but fortunately it isn't a common occurance - if it is there is something wrong that needs to be fixed.
Eating everything that is not nailed down at night will always be something you'll have to battle - weight loss surgery does nothing to our minds.
Best of luck to you on Tuesday! Make sure you follow the doctors directions - they are important!
Congratulations!
