Good Morning Everybody, I went to see Dr Aranow for my 2 years check up last Friday. He was very pleased with my progress BUT he wants me to eat CARBS ( that word fears me because I was former CARBS Queen) and some fruits. Okay Since you have been watching me since I had this surgery and I have been your model and inspire(SP) you. I am not kind of person who ask for help but I have a problem with my fear to eat CARBS again because I do not want to addict to eat CARBS again! I need your help to give me some tips about Good CARBS. All of you know that I exercise alot 5 or 6 times a week which Dr Aranow said I need more carbs to store my body because of too many exercise to burn calories. I do feel tired sometime and I know I need rest and slow down but I always keep busy myself like a train. How man grams of good carbs per day? I will track my CARBS per day but I know it is NONE carbs but I will try to eat some but I do have fears to put this CARBS in my mouth and become fat again. My friend told me to try use www.Nutrihand.com but I have not look into that yet but I will By the way, It was nice to meet Momof four from our Ct message board at Dr Aranow's office. She was impressed how I looked like and said I should be speaker for Pre op people . Thank you for listening my venting since I never ask for your helps! Hugs Kathy K I have two cops to watch me now is Julio my big bro who is motherhen and my neighbor Terri who will bring good carbs to me SIGH!!!!!

Kathy: I now make these all part of my day. I do believe they help keep my energy levels balanced. Good Carbs in my life: GRAINS: 1/4 c oatmeal, 1/4 brown rice FRUIT: 1/2 apple, 1/3 banana, 1/2 C cantelope, 1/4 to 1/2 C grapes, 2 tbls to 1/4 C applesauce (homemade no sugar!) As I remember more I will pass them along to you. I can ask my nutritionist what the carb gms are daily if you like. Good for you to listen to your doc and make the change you need to in order to continue to be successful longterm. While it might be scary... it is doable.. baby steps and before you know it you will have incorporated some good carbs and get the energy your body needs to support your rigorous exercise routine. For me... I talk to my body often. I tell it that the food I am offering it is for strength, health and nutrition. I then ask my body to accept it as such and use it well. TEAMWORK. While I do have fears of gaining my weight back, I try to forge ahead without fear being the prime emotion. Again... hard at times, but doable. And BTW? Asking for help is HEALTHY! Is not a sign of weakness... but a sign of strength. Then you have the option of getting info and taking what works for you and leaving the rest. It's all about balance. Give and take. T.

Well, Kathy...Carbs are a slippery slope for me....But I too need to make sure I get enough in... SO I just make sure it is whole grains, as much as possible....1/2 sandwich with whole grain bread, banana, oatmeal, whole grain pasta (can't eat too much of that though)...and I always try to eat fruit...apples, oranges.... Carbs does not have to mean sugar...It CAN mean healthy whole grains that keep you going all day long, when combined with protein.....SO combining a carb with a high protein food may keep the carb cravings from kicking in......

Kathy I was so happy to meet you too! I saw you walk in and I thought- OH MY GOD IT"S KATHY KREWSKY!!!! kind of like OH MY GOD ITS THE QUEEN OF ENGLAND or OH MY GOD THAT"S THE POPE!!!! My mom loved Dr Aranow- he did EXACTLY the same thing I tried a month ago and she rejected in 5 minutes (duoderm) and told her EXACTLY the same things I have been telling her- but it all sounds like a good idea coming from him - LOL- she respects him right off- because I do - she's all about listening to him- she said to me on the phone "no of course I want the mattress cover ( a gel pressure relief device Dr aranow said she should have, that myself and the nurse from the VNA said she should have but she told us no) I never said I didn't want to try it- he wants me to have one" I could scream- but hey this is exactly why I took her straight to God himself. ANYHOW I digress as Towanda always says. CARBS- I eat Pepperidge Farm Light Style Bread 7 Grain- 2 slices have 18 grams of carbs with 2 of it being fiber (so it doesn't count) Have a sandwich for lunch with it HAve whole wheat pasta, have half a whole grain English muffin with an egg for breakfast. You do need carbs- stay away from the devil of carbs- white flour- avoid the white flour trap and you are okay. Triscuits- I love triscuits with melted low fat cheddar- what a great snack- add some apple slices and you have a wonderful snack

I understand your fear completely. That's my fear too. I know bad carbs trigger me off the deep end. I stay away from all white carbs. I only have the good carbs. Good carbs do not trigger me. Thank God. Good luck and you'll see , you'll be o.k. Koukla

Hi Kathy, As a former Atkins junkie (before WLS), I too had a great fear of carbs. I do eat them now, but I really try to stick with whole grains and whole wheat. I do not eat white flour, except for an occasional spoonful of ravioli. From what I understand, whole grains and whole wheat do not raise blood sugar levels the way white carbs do, so I don't get the rise in my sugar level and then the crash that follows, and also I don't get the craving for more like I do with white carbs. I have found this to be true. I eat a slice of "Yoga" bread almost every morning with reduced fat peanut butter, and it holds me until lunch. The other mornings I eat Oatmeal and mix in a tiny bit of raisins. I also eat whole wheat pasta occasionally and I buy whole wheat pizza dough on occasion as well. Staying away from the white carbs does make a difference for me. I still don't eat alot of carbs, but I do eat them, and they are healthy. Just take it slow, add alittle at a time until you feel calmer and realize you won't gain weight. Don't worry, you won't wake up 10 pounds heavier the next day or anything. Good luck to you. Anne
