hi Dianne, first, congratulations for making this decision. You'll see, it will be a good one. Your journey has started. You just had MAJOR SURGERY. Don't forget that. it will take a good six weeks to feel normal. Don't ru**** follow the doctors orders and don't hesitate to call his office if you feel something isn't right. I know I went thru a period of sadness after surgery. But this will pass. We think we lost our best friend (food) but we really haven't. We are gaining a new life. And food will still be in our lives but not in the amounts as before. Remember to walk around the house now and when you do start food remember to chew, chew and chew again before swallowing and follow the gastic bypass rules. Those rules will make you succede at keeping the weight off. And drink plenty of water. We dehydrate very easily now. Now you must sip but later you will be able to drink almost regular. The anaesthesia makes water taste rotten. The gas they blow us up with and the surgery itself makes us uncomfortable and as I said before losing our comfort (food) makes us sad. But all this will pass and you will love living again. Good luck. Koukla 338/187/? date of surgery 9-16-05 height 5'6"

Hi Diane! I'm about 2 weeks out now from open RNY. It WILL get better!!! Make sure you are egetting in your fluids and try hard to reach your protein goals. Believe it or not sipping your fluids will help the nausea. If water is to hard on your tummy try the crystal lights....somehow they "soften" the water and your tummy will be quieter. good luck with everything!!!

Hi Dianne, I had my surgery on WEd of this past weeek, I too like you am feeling the same. I think we just have to rustin everyone that has verhad the surgery before. There is no one in my support group that regrets the decision. My stomach growls too. I think what you are experiencing is what is normal after major surgery. Good luck on your journey. Susan

Hi Dianne, First of all, congratulations on your surgery! Second...you're just four days post op and had open major surgery! Give yourself a rest! Third...Dr Aranow told me right after surgery that I could expect to feel every emotion in the book from sadness to anger to depression after surgery up to eight weeks out. And, I did! At week three I cried like a baby. Then I felt elation at times. Then depression. It's all the changes going on in our bodies and minds. Hormones, etc. If you feel something is not right, call and speak to Lois, she will help you. The queasiness is normal. The feeling of being uncomfortable is also normal. Is your binder too tight? I got nauseaus when my binder was too tight. The internal sutures underneath the skin are healing (they are deep and about one to two inches on each side of your incision and are keeping your incision together. Plus, your suture lines that cut and closed your bypass are also healing. This is why you're on only liquids so that they can heal and not bust open. Have some broth for the queasiness. It may help. Or take the bubbles out of some ginger ale and sip that. Try to please get in at least 65 gms of protein a day. This will be the first question that he will ask you at your two week visit. It is THE most important thing in your diet right now. For healing and energy and weight loss. I had a hard time sleeping flat, so I slept in my recliner for two weeks. It took me a good 8 weeks until I felt totally back to normal. Walking everyday helps. It seems that it wouldn't, but it does help you heal and bounce back. Don't over do, but at least get going and moving. If you have any questions, you can email me at [email protected] Paula

I am 6 days out from a laproscopic gastric bypass. My stomach grumbles too. Usually I take a few sips when that happens and the feeling goes away. I don't know about you but I am only on 2 oz of Ensure 3 times a day. I must have at least 32 oz of water, free fluids a day. This has been the hardest so far. I could have chugged 2-16 oz bottles of water in one shot. Now it's taking 12 hours!!
