I have a question. I was told never to have candy. Candy will make you dump. It's very bad for us. And all that stuff. but then I read hear how some have candy. I don't want any but I am very curious as to how those who had the gastric bypass could have it. I even had a gastric bypass person tell me that they eat it. But wasn't that why we had this surgery? And because the doctor informed me of that I don't even have a desire for candy. I do keep of bowl of sugar free candy around just in case. So I guess my question is why have it if we'll get sick from it? thanks, Happy halloween Koukla

Hi Koukla, Not everyone dumps...some dump on sugar, some on fats, some on both... Some can have little bits of candy (like me) and not dump, but if I push anything that has a lot of sugar in it, I get nauseaus and shaky and sometimes vomit. As far as losing your desire for sweets, not everyone gets this. Dr Aranow has told us that some lose it forever with WLS, some don't, it's like a fluke thing. Why have it? Cause we're human and we crave things occassionally and I am a firm believer that if I deprive myself of what I'm craving, I'll obsess on it and eat more of other foods anyways..This way, if I eat what I'm craving (have it be carbs or salty foods vs sweets) I get it out of my system and don't crave it for a long time and I'm done with it. I was just like that with black licorice. I was craving it for 3 weeks. I was dreaming of it. I finally bought a small package, ate it all (didn't dump) and got it out of my system. I probably won't want it again for another 5 years cause I can't remember the last time I had it. We can't deprive ourselves of everything, it'll drive you crazy... Paula

I don't dump on candy- well not the little bit I allow myself now and then..and I stick to peanut m and m's ...now Ice Cream, one stinking bite and I am sick. Lemon Meringue pie- had a few bites last Easter hubby thought he was going to have to call me an Ambulance I passed out. Everybody is an individual- my desires and cravings are a lot different now. after the RNY. I get satiated easily now, and "am over it" pretty quick where before I never got that full satisfied feeling

I know what you mean with never getting that full satisfied feeling. Before I would never be satisfied either. I would go from the sweets to the salts back to the sweets.... You know, the awful cycle. Hopefully that doesn't come back. Thanks, Koukla

Hi Koukla, I don't touch candy or any type of sweet what so ever. I'm afraid of what it will do to me physically and emotionally it is my "trigger" food of choice. I purposely had the RNY surgery to avoid candy and sweets as these areas have always been my down fall. I do find that I will get "dumping" from too much of sugar free items such as pudding, ice cream, and sugar free candy or dessert. I think it's the sugar alchohol in it. I find that even various "regular" foods can cause me to feel queasy and "off kilter" simular to dumping. (a few bites of bread & I'm done in) Since the surgery I find I'm very "fussy" over what I eat because I need to make it count as high protein & good for me. I do have cravings for a sweet (mostly around my monthly visitor) and when I do I will make a special treat for my self (sugar free chocolate chip cookie) or will go to Munson's at the mall & pick up a few choice pieces of sugar free chocolate. You could never tell it was sugar free. I always have sugar free pudding (Jello) on hand if I'm in a pinch. But I find once I have taken care of the craving I'm satisfied for a LONG time and won't crave the stuff for a few months. I've heard of RNY post ops that can pretty much eat what they want...I feel very blessed that I'm "not one of them" as that would be a slipperly slop for me. I don't want to try candy or regular desserts (although I can have a few bites of cheese cake without fruit topping and It doesn't cause me distress just gets me full quicker) I do find recently that I am craving "carbs & sweets" but I'm doing my best to keep things in check...just had plastic surgery & I believe it's more from my recovery and "being bored with just hanging around the house." Best wishes Koukla, you'll find what works for you, Mickey

Hi Mickey, Me too. That is exactly why I chose the Gastric bypass. I know candy and desserts were my downfall. If I had to chose food food or candy and desserts for a meal I would chose the candy and desserts. And i know I would self sabatage myself. so I don't want to go down that road. Like you said there are plenty of sugar free items to get us by with. I keep them on hand for just those times. Carbs was always another trigger for me so I have been keeping to the good carbs. I have noticed if I do have a bad carb it does trigger me and I have to get back on to the beginning road again fast. How did your plastics go? I'm not ready for that yet but I am starting to think about it. Hope all went well. thank you, Koukla
