High Protein/Low Cal Snack ideas?
Hi Tee-
I am 16 months out.
I am really nervous that I am eating too much and stretching my stomach, but I also am just nervous of gaining weight again. I cannot afford a nutritionist and my insurance won't cover it, so I really don't have too great an idea of caloric intake, amount of fat and carbs I should eb having at this point. = /
Hi Amanda,
Below is a calculator on caloric intake to maintain. This is for a normal person. I would suggest about 10% below the calories they suggest due to our inability to digest everything in our stomaches. The intestinal track will pull more calories out of the foods taken in because of the this. Hence not going to carbs for sustenance.
Other factor to watch out for, the carb monster. Artificial sweeteners (all kinds) have now shown that they fool the body into thinking it's a natural sugar and will start the insulin cycle and cause you to "feel" more hunger. They too need to be limited.
Here is the calculator

And here is a great site for glycemic index. It's a bit technical, but read the intro to understand the list and it will really show you how foods you thought were cool to eat had a bigger impact than you realize.
I'm no saint and do make poor choices from time to time, but having a lot of this stored in my head keeps me from making more bad choices than I need.
Hang in there and know you are not alone.

Amanda,
I also enjoy 1/2 piece of fruit for a good snack. A couple of pear, or apple slices, 1/2 banana, etc. Add a tablespoon of natural peanut butter for a dip to add some protein.
A good point was made as to how far you are out of surgery. It is always wise to use the guidelines your dietian has given you regarding your meals and snacks.
Love the suggestions everyone has made.... great ideas!

Amanda:
This is the time of the day that I use my protein supplemental shake.
I use the Isopure powder with some lowfat milk. If you are lactose intolerant...you can use water.
It seems to work for me at this time of the day.
It keeps me in the liquid phase between meals, yet gives me that pickup that I seem to need.
And righ****er between meals is a good appetite supressor.
Your nutritionist (do you see one?) can also help with this question.
