Hey everyone- I am finding myself really hungry about 2-3 hours after lunch. I am trying to make good choices in terms of having a snack. Anybody have any ideas for snacks that are high in protein, low in cals and low in carbs? Here is the catch...no cheese = ) Any ideas would be really, really helpful!! Thanks Amanda

Hi Amanda, Beef Jerkey comes to mind. Suger Free ice pops, Almonds, carrot sticks, may want to take a long drink of flavored water, sometimes the body mistakes hunger for thirs****er will help you feel full. I put a packet of that Iced tea to go in my water for a treat. Hope I helped!

Amanda, I like a little sweet in the afternoon. I usually have a south beach cereal bar. 140cals, 10g protein, i think... 12-15g carbs. they come in chocolate, cinnimon raisin, peanut butter and cranberry nut flavors. i have also mixed a few raisins with some nuts or sunflower seeds. mix a little protein powder in a ff pudding cup w/ff cool whip i don't know if you are at work all day and have access to a freezer (i don't), but sf popcicles are my #1 favorite snack. I will be one in my next life, I am sure of it. terri

Hi Kathy- I don't have very much liquid intake per day. It is my biggest struggle. I try to sip throughout the day b/c I am nervous about stretching my stomach, but I only wind up taking in 40-60 oz of liquid all day

Sam's club carries these soy chips, they are called soy saucers...come in barbaque, chedder cheese, and apple cinnamon flavor...9-11 grams of protein, a nice, crunchy snack...Also, slices of apples with peanutbutter (natural variety, no added sugar or fats)..celery sticks with a fat-free plain yogurt dip doctored up with some onion dip mix.., My favorite afternoon pick-me up is a decaf latte light from dunkin donuts, with coconut flavor (dd's has flavors with no sugar added), and splenda...the latte light comes with skim milk, and is high in protein from the milk...since it has so much more molk than a regular coffee,,, Some of the light yogurts are really good, fat-ree, low in sugar..... try different things, and always keep a supply handy, so when you do get hungry you have a healthy snack nearby.... Good luck, Dorota

Dannon has a new line called Crave. It's low fat yogurt with some cereal mixed in for more bulk. I've found 3 flavors so far...Vanilla, Strawberry and Peach. Hubby and I really like them. They fill you up because they have a thicker consistency. Here's the nutrition on them: Calories 70 Fat 0gms Protein 7 gms Carbs 11gms Sugar 7gms Beef jerky is good, peanut butter, some protein bars (watch the labels, some are very high in everything), sf popsicles Most of all, drink a lot of water quickly (water loading) before you go for that snack. It will fill you quickly and help a lot. Paula

Hi Amanda, It might help if you tell us how far out you are. Many of the suggestions have way too many carbs if you are less than a year out. Plus I'm assuming if you say no cheese, than you are lactose intolerant, so many of the dairy suggestions are no good either. I would say stick to natural proteins. Hard boiled eggs ham or turkey rollups (if too dry you can put a little cole slaw in the middle) Tyson makes a buffalo chicken jerky (much lower in fat than beef varieties) Kathy's idea of cold shrimp is great I find hot drinks satisfy me more than cold drinks, but everyone is different. I keep instant broth packets with me and have an electric ho****er kettle at work. I am not trying to slight any other suggestions, I just find, for myself, when I substitute one bad snack I used to eat pre-op with something similar, it gets me back to old ways of eating and triggers my grazing button. Eliminating that kind of snacking can be key to long term success. (I know too many long term postops that have put on way too much weight playing the substitution game). And to be honest, we should not consume anymore than 5 carbs at any meal. More than that triggers the insulin and makes us crave more carbs. Please no flaming, I just have her best interests in mind.
