Starbucks
Hello all,
Took a friend out to lunch today & we stopped at Starbucks for a pick me up for the afternoon. I bought a coffee that had flavoring in it w/whole milk.
Added splenda....& I am feeling just AWFUL!!
I'm literally having hot flashes...feel almost like I have a flu bug without the flu...my heart is beating like crazy....I never was a fan of Starbucks pre-surgery...and now Iknow why....BLECK!! Not sure if it's the whole milk causing the problem or the flavoring? Don't normally have whole milk...and the flavoring at Dunkin Donuts doesn't bother me.
Thinking I'm having a dose of dumping syndrom & hopefully the symptoms will pass in the next 1/2 hour or so...on top of it I feel a headache coming on...
Learned my lesson...no more starbucks coffee...
Have a good night all,
Mickey
Hello my favorite & inspirational chef!
Symptoms are starting to pass a little... just have a watery mouth feeling happening along with the headachy feeling. BLECKY...
Must be an off week with the pouch...will take it easy on it this weekend & keep things "light". Over a year out and every once in awhile the pouch lets me know it's the boss.
The good thing is that it shows it's working & keeping me honest. Dispite the few setbacks. How's that for a positive spin on dumping sydrom LOL
(even though I haven't tried to press my limits & done my best to play by the rules since my first day of surgery.)
Going to try to put some good old fashion water in it to see if I can flush out the rest of the coffee. Have a great weekend buddy!
Mickey
Hi Mickey,
I know what you are going through, since my surgery I cannot drink any kind of milk except Lactaid. I talked to my doctor and he said I may grow out of the dumping but I'm 4 yeas post op. and every once in awhile I'll try it and get so sick .Now I NEVER drink anything but low fat Lactaid. It really taste pretty good .Good luck,

Ah, I love Starbucks!!!!
Unlike Dunkin Donuts, where the flavorings are sugar free, most of Starbucks' flavors are made with sugar.
If you are anything like me (which I will not assume you are), it may be the combo of the sugar in the flavoring and the fat in the whole milk...Sugar and fat, that's a combo that always does me in....
Now, when it comes to Starbucks, I always specify the sugar free flavor, I think they have sugar free vanilla and hazelnut......And I get the skim milk latte....yummy
this way you get lots of protein, as the latte has a lot of skim milk, not just a little bit like regular coffee...and for me, it's like a desert, a treat...Oh, and you may want to order it decaf...better for the tummy........I sometimes get regular, sometimes decaf, sometims half decaf and half regular......depends on how the pouch feels..it gets grouchy if i give it too much cafeine....
Enjoy!!!
Thanks everyone for your advice, experiences, and support.
I'm thankful that the dumping passed pretty quickly. My pouch was off all weekend & I threw up Friday night at a restaurant. That's always a fun experience...people must think I'm binging/purging. I try to be discreet when this happens in public...sigh...
Had to take it easy all weekend on the pouch. Sunday I don't know what happen but let's just say the "DAM" burst & I was in the bathroom all morning Sunday. Think I lost
5 lbs just from that! (OK that's a visual) hee hee.
I don't have whole milk (& rarely drink low fat) so I'm thinking that combined with the sugar in the flavorings did me in. (I didn't realize there was sugar in flavorings) Lesson learned!
Dorota I'm definately going to try what you do for Starbucks...when I'm ready to give them a try again. For now I'll stick with DD for my caffiene fixes. Caffiene doesn't bother my pouch so it's the one vice I give myself along with cream in my coffee.
Thanks again everyone!
Mickey
I know I'm late on the reply- but it was probably the combo of the regular milk AND the flavoring. FAT and SUGAR a double whammy.
Next time use skim or soy milk and ask for SUGAR FREE flavoring. I'm actually surprised they put that in a coffee for you, they generally give you a hard time about putting suryp in a coffee (at least I've heard them do it in my local starbucks)- it's not really made for coffee, it's made for espresso drinks. So, it tastes kinda ucky in their coffee.
Anyway- better luck next time- and ALWAYS assume that any flavoring has SUGAR in it unless it specifically sasy SUGAR FREE (Starbucks has Vanilla and sometimes Hazelnut to choose from in Sugar Free.)
Best,
