I'm 4 months out and was wondering if anyone has had a problem with getting UTI'S or bladder infections since surgery? I am constantly getting them. I did stop taking B12 & multi-vit for a week and the problem did stop, however, once I start taking them again, I start all over again with the UTI/bladder infection. I made an appt with my gyno for this afternoon, but was wondering if anyone else has experienced this and if it's possible that the multi-vit and/or B12 is causing this? P.S. I don't drink any soda/carbonations at all, nor do I have things with acid in them. I drink plenty of water too!! Thanks, Stacy 269/187/150

Hi Stacy, I would call Doctor A's office and talk to Lois. She should be able to give you some info or even tell you what you can do. Good luck and feel better. UTI's suck ~Chrissy

I can't imagine that your vitamin could or would effect your UTI or Bladder infection. One doesn't have anything to do with the other. It sounds more like you have a persistent recurring infection that's not completely going away with your antibiotic. Time to check in w/Dr. A and your gyno. You may need your gyno to try a different antibiotic- dont' forget that oral meds can be partially mal-absorbed and therefore be not as effective in some folks. Good luck! lisa c

I wonder if you aren't just having the SAME UTI over and over- in other words- my guess is that you got a UTI post op in the hospital(from having a foley in) and you have never really irradicated it. As for the things with acid- that's exactly what you want to do- acidify your urine. Get some cranberry extract capsules. The are sold with all the herbs/vitamins/supplements at the pharmacy. Check with Lois to make sure you are clear to take pills that size first- otherwise you can open the capsules up into applesauce and take that way. This will acidify the urine and help kill the bacteria. If you haven't had a urine culture and sensitivity done yet- you need your PCP or GYN to order one - see what exactly the organism is you are dealing with so you can take an antibiotic specific to it. You should be drinking copious amounts of fluids- like 64 plus ounces a day. I don't think the vitamins have anything to do with it- unless you are allergic to a stabilizer in them- like yeast or whatever- try switching brands but again, I highly doubt there is a correlation You are doing great weight wise I see- excellent job!!!

Hi Stacey I had a bladder & kidney infection about 3 months out after my surgery...that was awful...I believe it was caused by the cathater while I was in the hospital recovering. The pain and nausea was overwhelming, and I did go to the hospital finding out I was dehydrated to boot. It is one experience I don't want to have again for a very long time. I did try to drink diet cranberry ocean spray but unfortunately the meds I was on plus my new pouch did not want to cooperate and I kept throwing everything up. Can't say if the B12 is causing your problem..as I was taking B12 steadily without any mishaps. Definately see your Dr/GYN. Hope you're feeling better soon, Mickey

Your problem may be with the type of calcium you are taking. I have problems with kidney stones and had a terrible bout after surgery because I was using Tums for my calcium supplement. If you are using Tums (calcium carbonate) you may want to try switching to calcium citrate instead. I take it in liquid form and buy it from bariatriceating.com. It's orange flavored and tastes really good.
