Hi there, I had the lapband on 7/3 and have lost about 19 lbs. I'm not sure if this is considered average weight loss or if I should have lost more. Any adivice?

Hi...I'd like to suggest you post also to the lap band forum here at obesityhelp - it's a very active and friendly board and I'm sure you'll get a lot of responses to your questions. You can find it by clicking the forums tab up top and then choose Lap Band from the Surgery Types Forums list. Best of luck in your endeavors!

Hope~ While I am not a "bander".... I know from listening to other banders and the docs talk at the seminars, that banders lose slower... I have also heard it said that before your first fill anything that you lose is "icing on the cake". Sorry for the food analogy... but you get my drift. Also... as Julio says all the time... THIS IS NOT RACE.... nor a competition. Coming to the CT Forum and asking is a good thing. Might help ease your mind a bit. And here's something to ask yourself... when was the last time you lost 19 lbs in a month prior to surgery? So I am sure you are more on target than you think. But to assure you are, check with your doc, your nutritionist and as Toots said, the lapband forum. Also, go to Dr. A's support group meetings if you have not already begun to do so. I find support group meetings very helpful. Hang in there. The first few months are the hardest. Lots to get use to...lots of changes. Towanda P.S. Hope to see you at the Walk for Obesity (both of them!) September 17th at Cove Marina in Bridgeport (details to follow soon) September 30th (kathy k has location, etc.)

Hi Hope, I was banded on 8/1 and lost about the same amount of weight. I don't know if it is normal or not, didn't ask at my check up. I decided to try and not compare myself with others ...Julio gave me a speaking to!! No seriously, everyone loses at a different pace and we are suppose to be healing these 6 weeks. Good luck and take care! Nancy K

Hi there! You are not supposed to be focused on losing right now - it's the stage that you need to focus on healing and learning how to eat properly - the fact that you've lost 19 pounds already is outstanding! The band is supposed to be an AVERAGE weight loss of 1 to 2 pounds a week - the reason I stress average is because you could drop 6 pounds in one week and then nothing for 2 weeks which would give you an average of 2 pounds a week. Right now you've averaged about 5 pounds per week - everyone is so very different that your question really can't be answered whether you should or shouldn't have lost more - it is what it is..........Enjoy the ride - you might be a fast loser, you might be a slow loser - the big thing is - you will be a loser!! Hange in there and work the band! Congratulations and best of luck on your journey. Tammy

That's actually really good- and if you asked Dr Aranow- after he finished lecturing you on staying off the scale, he'd tell you to get to support group meetings- they have one for lap banders at Middlesex. You haven't had a fill yet- you are still in the healing stages as Tammy said- focus on eating/drinking what you have been told to so you heal up right, and make an appointment with Liz the dietician if you need help on what to eat. You sound like you are doing great and are right on track- so hang in there. Lap band is not as fast a weight loss as RNY gastric bypass. you need to be more patient. You have been obese how long? years I guess- so expecting the weight to come off super sonic fast isn't realistic is it? That's my mantra- took me thirty years to get this fat, it will take more than a few months to undo that damage.....

I know I have to be patient and give it time. I go for my first fill tomororw and will also meet with Dr Aronow and the dietician. I plan on attending the lap band support groups. Thanks all for your support and suggestions. I appreciate it.

Dear Hope, Hello from a fellow Middlesex Hospital/Dr. Aranow bandster. Any chance you might make it to the general post-op meeting tonight? I'd love to meet you and talk band talk. You do not have a picture on your profile so I won't know you.. ergo, puh-lease look for me if you go tonight. Your weight loss is fantastic by the way and you're ahead of the bandster curve. Best wishes from Mary M P.S. My name is really Geraldine, which I hate.

Thanks so much for your kind message. I wasn't able to attend the lap band meeting on August 21st. Unfortunately I also have an appointment on 9/11 so I will regretably miss that one too. I definately plan on going to the one after that. I will look for you. I thought about going to one of the other meetings since I will miss the lap band meeting. I had my first fill on Monday and spoke to Dr. Aranow and he said I'm doing good. I guess I just needed reassurance. Looking forward to meeting you.
