Curves- anyone go there?
I need to start exercising, more than walking. With the weather we've been having, it's been so easy to not go outside for a walk. My friend's sister owns 2 Curves places, on in Shelton and one in Stratford (I live in Stratford) and my husband suggested going there because it doesn't take alot of time. I work in Stamford, by the time I get home it's usally after 6pm at the earliest, and I would like to spend some time with my son and husband, but the 30 minute workout sounds like it could work out for me. Any insight that you can provide would be great.
Thanks!
Lisa
I used to be a member a few years back at Curves...I found that it's really not enough cardio to get your heart pumping. It's a lot of toning cause of the machines, and, yes, is quick to do the circuit twice...
Depending on how successful the branch of Curves is, is relative to how many machines they have (or so I was told by the owner at my local one). If the membership is high, then they let you buy more machines. Some centers only have say, 8 machines, and wait to buy more when the membership increases. My center was very high in membership, so they had about 16 machines to complete the circuit.
You want to check on this. You want a good workout.
I didn't use my membership much. It was before my WLS. Would I rejoin now post op? Probably not. I prefer to walk and get cardio from a treadmill, or eliptical machine.
I'm a member at the Y.
Don't just take my opinion, though. Some people swear by Curves. Women love it and it's a successful business. I'd ask to have a free week membership to see for yourself.

I do work out on evenings all the time and also do workout during my lunch time too. Terri,,Paula, you Nancy and Linnie can work out on weekends if we can do that to support each ohter like go on walking trail hike with Nordric poles etc.. we will find something to keep I do understand about during week but I suggest you to get one of your favorite machine trend mill or ellilppe (sp?) to work out youself for 30 min while watch tv or talk with your family at home during week then join with all of us for on weekend to exercise. Just now I cannot excerise because of my surgery. I will be at L M support group meeting on August 16th and hope to meet you there!

Lisa:
About a month postop, I joined the one in Fairfield. It was good for me for a couple of reasons:
1- QUICK! About 40 minutes (including changing time) on the way home from work
2- A good workout, but not so strenuous that I thought it would kill me
3 - Women only, and all shapes, sizes and ages, so it wasn't at all intimidating
4- Workoout is pretty low-impact, except for the walking stations (between the machines), which was not too bad
5- They weigh and measure you upon request and keep a computerized tally so you can see your progress. A GREAT help when the scale's needle won't move, but you find out that you've lost a lot of INCHES
6 - I also got a free 2-week trial so, if I hated it, I wouldn't be out any money
I thought the place and the people were wonderful. After about 9 months, tho, I discovered that, since the machines are not adjustable, I was not being challenged as much physically, so my husband and I joined "regular" gym together.
But Curves was a great place to start for someone as out of shape as I was.

Hi Lisa,
I work out at CURVES in Ellington. It is a great way to get started. It does take 30-40 minutes to complete the circuit.
I agee with a few of the others if you're looking for an indepth excerise/cardio program Curves maynot be for you.
I enjoy it as it's quick for me...and I'm definately tone. They do have a "harder" circut designed for people looking to burn more calories (at least in my location) where they focus more on the machines and how many reps you do. I haven't done this yet as I work out there 3x a week (give or take) and I walk alot during the days off from Curves.
It is a good place to start for low impact and the comraderie can't be beat. I've been going there a little over a year and I enjoy it.
