Proteins & vitamins
Hi beth, I use liquid B-12 along with chewable multi vitamin's and chewable calcium. Dr. Nazdam did my surgery and I was on some other meds prescribed by his office that needed to be crushed before taking. I folded them into a couple of teaspoons of suger free applesauce as the stuff I had tasted pretty horrible. As far as protien drinks you will have instructions after surgery that will tell you how to get your protien in. At first, just lived on Carnation instant breakfast and egg drop soup right after surgery. Long term protien drinks depend on your individual tastes so get as many samples as you can and find something you like. Good Luck on your surgery!
Hi Beth,
After surgery, I didn't have trouble with any protien powder/drinks. But before surgery, I looked around for different kinds (sample size if possible). One time I was in the natural foods store in the strip mall down the road from Middlesex Hosp. in Middletown; and I found the Spirulina brand in individual serving sizes. I wanted to see what they were like, so I bought a bunch of flavors.
You could ask your dietition which brand is the clear kind, too. Some GBer's have trouble after surgery with milky or creamy protein powders. I think Nectar brand is clear and has flavors like lemonade and fuzzy naval. Also, you might think of trying to find a nonflavored powder that can go into soups, yogurts and oatmeal.. That could help if you have trouble meeting your protein requirements. I got tired of sweet stuff, and was happy to add protein to something like soup. I had to stay on liquids for 6 weeks, though).
Some people say they have trouble with soy protein, some have trouble with whey, although whey it supposed to be better absorbed or something.
For vitamins, my dietition wanted me to take 2 Flintstones complete after surgery. The chewable calcium doesn't start for a few weeks (1200-1500mg). I also started taking Biotin and a B-complex, to help guard against hair loss. I take many other vitamins, but they are extra, not what everyone needs. I've always had trouble absorbing nutrition since I've lost 2/3 of my intestines-before WLS surgery-from croh'ns related complications.
When you are ready to buy protein after your surgery, you may find good deals at drugstore.com.
Well, good luck.
