Dumping

Hello Everyone, I had my very first episode of dumping syndrom Monday night...OMG! I NEVER want to experience that again... My dinner didn't sit well & I wound up it up. Sometimes I wonder why I torture myself with trying to incorporate pork into my diet. It just doesn't sit...once in awhile I'll luck out but usually it comes right back up... It was a good 1 1/2 hours later and I wanted my snack of sugar free ice cream (Breyer's Vanilla) and I bought some sugar free strawberry topping...well had about 1/4 cup of my yummy sundae with sliced almonds and less than 20 minutes later I wished to God I never ate it... My heart was racing..I was sweaty, my whole left side was weak, queasy, and so lethargic I thought I was going to fall on the floor and pass out...It lasted a good hour or so...OMG it was just awful! I couldn't wait to crawl into bed I thought I was going to die right there. I'm not sure if throwing up earlier in the night could have set off the dumping or helped it along....I don't understand how dumping can take place if the ice cream was sugar free? (4 grams per serving.) plus the topping barely had any (1 gram per 2 tablspoons) I've eaten other items lower sugar/sugar free without dumping.. UGH...well that's one for my books not to go near again..BLECKY! Now I know what dumping is like & I definately don't want it to happen for a VERY long time...eww.. I don't think I'll ever look at Vanilla ice cream the same way again..LOL Have a good night all, Mickey

there is still sugar alcohol in that kind of stuff and sometimes that can set it off- my guess is on an empty stomach it didn't take much....poor girl.

DUMPING SUCKS!!!!! I too have had similar situations....and have noticed that if I have one "bad meal", it usually means my pouch is out of commission for the rest of the day. I usually try to keep liquids going and start fresh the next day. Sometimes I think I dump not from only the sugar content, but the fat content in foods as well. It's a very strange thing. As a result...I have avoided several "old loves". Take care!!! C

Hey Christina, Learned my lesson after this and won't be trying anything like that any time in the near future. BLECK! I'll play it safer next time and go back to my normal routine after throwing up. Which is what you do exactly keeping it liquid and "light".. Have a good morning, Mickey

Hey Mickey, Sorry to hear you had to go thru that. I do that alot. There are certain things that just don't agree with my belly anymore. So I know how you feel sweetie. Its the most awful feeling in the world and sometimes scary too. I guess we learn from what we do. Hope your doing okay and feel better. Hugs to you Hugs KimC

Hey Kim, It was pretty scary I'll admit to that! I'm thankful that I researched what dumping was so I didn't panic just road it out once I recognized it. I can't imagine dumping happening alot..ugh this was the first time for me & hopefully the last...I'll need to be more careful in the future. I got through it ok..just an AWFUL AWFUL feeling...it's like having the flu & a virus all at once with your heart racing...BLECKY Hugs back atcha, Mic

Mickey, I dump from fat too...so, it could be that the ice cream could have quite a bit of fat in it to compensate for being sugar free. The manufacturers usually add one or the other to compensate for the taste. Always check both, sugar and fat content of foods. I've found that I've dumped more from fats at times than from the actual sugars. And yes, upsetting your pouch earlier from the pork probably kept it a bit unstable to handle the sundae. Be kind to yourself today and stick to bland foods... paula

Do keep in mind that many people dump as readily on fats as they do on sugars and sugar alcohol. ANY kind of ice cream is the DEVIL to me. I simply, even this far can NOT eat any ice cream, frozen yogurt, ice milk, low fat, low carb...etc, it just doens't matter- it ALL makes me dump. I think it's the combination of ALL the above factors compounded by the lactose and sugar from the milk/cream. Oh well- luckily for me, probably, sine I was an ice cream fiend before surgery. I do miss it- but I'll certainly live (and live healthier) without it. Also- general rule of thumb- dump once- baby your pouch for the next 24 hours. Best, lisa
