Hey everyone.... I am having a tough afternoon today. I recieved a phone call from my doctors office while I was out shopping today. When I got in I called right back and spoke with the woman that I usually deal with she said that the doctor wanted to talk with me, but he was leaving for the day and would need to call me tommorrow. He will call tomorrow between 1-3:30pm. She said that he wants to talk to me about switching to the lap band as opposed to lap RNY. I asked if there was a reason that he would prefer to do one over the other and she said she did not know I will have to wait and talk to him. When I met with him before completing all of my steps he agreed with my decision for RNY he said I am the perfect canidate for it. I do not have any co-mobidities and am in great health for weighing almost 300 lbs. I have not gone though my pre-op blood work or endoscopy yet that is next week and my date is three weeks away. So I am not wure why he would be making a special call to me to discuss this at this time. I see him next Friday. I guess I am just upset as I have been researching this and planning the new start to my life since January and now that it is three weeks away someone wants to change the rules on me. I have quit smoking and done everything asked of me. I know that both surgeries are successful but I do not like the idea of a port in my skin or going in for fills, everybody has reasons for their choice and these are mine. I also have a skin disease that I have dealt with all my life and while it may be fine I do not want anything just under the surface of my skin I am very very discouraged today. My Mom says that I should not stress and put it out of my mind till tomorrow but she is not me and I am a big stresser. Thank you for listening to my vent and if anyone knows why he might want me to change surgeries at this point, when there is no new medical information in my file for him to go on, I would love to hear others thoughts and opinions on this. Thanks again Terri

Hey Terri, Know you must be stressing big time after all you have gone thru. If you don't like what the doctor says and still want the RNY then if he doesn't want to do it ask him to refer you to a doctor that will. YOU are in control, you have already shown that in what you have done to get to this point so just keep reminding yourself that the final; decision is yours! Good Luck! Julio

I understand why you are upset, its tough having to wait basically a whole day to hear about something so important. But cheer up, either way you will have an excellent tool to help you with your weight. And perhaps if you discuss your feelings with your doc, he will change his mind. I know when I had my surgery, the decision was ultimately up to me. My insurance covered both so I had the choice. Good luck!

Hi Terri, It's your body, and your ultimate decision. If this surgeon decides that he does not want to do an RNY, I'd find a new surgeon. Just my opinion of course. If you have any issues of reflux or GERD, a lapband is not a great solution for weight loss. If you really want the RNY, tell the doctor so, you're paying HIM for this surgery and can go to another surgeon in a heartbeat. I look forward to you posting about what his issue is with you wanting a lapband now. If you weigh 300, I'd say that an RNY is better for you...my opinion again, also. paula

I think a lot of us are hoping and praying that somehow, somewhere along the line, the message to you got mixed up because it just seems so cruel for a doctor to leave a message for someone to talk them out of their bariatric surgery choice. Know that there are many gifted laparoscopic surgeons throughout CT who will respect the path that you want to take to regaining control over your relationship with food. If the surgeon with whom you've met tries to talk to you out of the RNY pointedly ask "WHY"; if studies are cited, ask to see copies. And, of course, ask about the costs of follow-up care and fills. And, don't be afraid to demand copies of your records and bring them to another surgeon.

Thank you to everyone for your thoughts. I feel much better knowing that what I have been thinking this afternoon and evening are normal thoughts. I will speak with him tomorrow and hear out what his thoughts may be as I really did like him on first impressions. He was also recommended by my ob/gyn who safely brought both my beautiful boys into this world and I trust her. However, I do not have a problem with going to another surgeon. I have made this decision and have not come to it lightly. I have researched it and talked it though with my family and RNY is the choice for me. The only why my mind could be changed is if it would adversly effect my health. My husband is a bit upset with the doctor for this. He,my husband, did not support my decision to have surgery in the begining out of fear of losing me and not completly understanding why I would chose this. He worked very hard to come around and support me and believe that this is a good decision for me. The doctor wanting to change things on me now has put that fear right back into my husband, not fear of the surgery now but fear that the doctoris not leading me down the right path. I feel bad for him he took so long to be ok with me doing this and now he has questions again. I guess all and all I feel bad for me too. Again thank you so much for being here and sharing your thoughts, it means a great deal to me and helps more then you will ever know. I will post tomorrow after the phone call and hopefully I will feel foolish for even having questionable thoughts about my doctor tonight. Terri

Hi Terri - I know that lap band is gentler on the body and sometimes surgeons feel the bypass puts the patient at a greater risk for complications in certain cir****tances. This is elective surgery, but if the surgeon is putting your health concerns first, he might have a valid point. I met a man last month who was a patient at a support group meeting that really wanted the bypass surgery but because of his health and age the surgeon thought the bypass was too great a risk for him so the man was pursuing lap band - he wasn't all that happy about it, but he still wanted to have some help in losing his weight. It is definitely worth a second opinion for you - I know that I would have been upset if I was told so soon before my surgery that the doctor wanted to do a bypass instead of the band when I had spent so much time and effort researching it and making my mind up! You certainly do sound like a candidate for the bypass, I'm curious to know what your doctor has to say! Best of luck to you - I know it's hard not to stress with something this important - but try to take a deep breath and know that it will all work out okay in the end...... Tammy
