Freezing water bottles will NOT kill you!
So, let's lay that urban legend to rest. Apparently, you shouldn't BOIL your water in the bottles, but if you like you water frosty, like I do, freeze away, my friends! Keep in mind that bottled water isn't shipped in climate-controlled trucks, so it would, more than likely, freeze in the winter anyway. It has been determined previously that you CAN, however, transfer germs and other critters from your mouth into a REUSED bottle, so be sure to wash 'em well if you reuse them.
From USA Today's "Your Health" column . . .
Q: I have gotten e-mail saying that freezing bottled water is harmful. Is that true? --
A: No, but that is a persistent urban legend, one that has dogged researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health for the past two years.
Certain versions of the e-mail you received say that scientists there believe that dangerous chemicals, including dioxins, can leach from plastic bottles when the water inside is frozen.
But plastic products don't contain dioxins, says Johns Hopkins scientist Rolf Halden. And although scientists have some concerns about other chemicals in plastics, there's no reason to think that freezing would cause release of those chemicals. If anything, freezing would slow down their release. The real concern is heating plastics that come in contact with foods and beverages. That's why the Department of Agriculture says plastic wraps should not directly touch foods in the microwave.
Hi All, Actually its a good idea if your packing for a day at the beach to freeze your water so by the time your ready to have one it's not only quite cold and ready to drink but has kept your cooler cold for all the other goodies you have brought along! Have a great day!
