Topic: RE: Not sure which surgery to do
I know what you are going through.  I had lap band scheduled and then a few days before started to wonder if I chose the right surgery.  After a talk with my surgeon who performs both I felt confident in my decision to go with the band.  Of course, I am now going to be partial to the band as it's working so well for me, but different things work for different folks.  I had a BMI of 42 and just over 100 to lose.  I am now down 40 (10 of that was while I was doing my homework on surgeries, going to seminars, etc) 30 of that is since my first consult with Dr. Snyder.  I know they say you lose faster with bypass, but I think that's pretty fast for me.  I take vitamins (chewable daily) and calcium.  With the band you don't have to worry about the vitamin b I think it is for the rest of your life.  My recovery was pretty quick, I was off b/p meds in one week's time.   I wish you the best of luck in your decision, I know it's not an easy one.  Both surgeries are good ones and you will succeed on either one.

I have BCBS Federal and I am not required for the 6 month diet.  They did ask for diet history, had to see the Nutrionist and Psychologist.  You can have the Doctor office call the insurance company for her and see what her requirements are. Sue

I can really only speak from my own personal experience.  I had over 150 lbs to lose, so I went w/ RNY.  I had thought of lab band, but talked myself out of it because it was really so new at the time and there wasn't enough information regarding the long term.  I have heard that if you have less than 100 lbs to lose, the band is probably the best way to go.  Honestly, recovery time from RNY wasn't that bad or long.  Only 3-4 weeks.  You can also still take vitamins after RNY, in fact, it's a must.  Could any of your committments be put on hold for a little while?  Afterall, it is your health.  I'm only asking. I wish you the best of luck with whatever you decide and sorry if I wasn't much assistance. Crystal

Topic: Not sure which surgery to do
Hello, I am totally confused, and frustrated.  I am scheduled to have lap band surgery on July 31st.  I have a BMI of 37 and only need to loose 70lbs.  I have failed all diets, and now have Metabolic Sydnrome and High Cholestrol issues.  Which surgery do you think would work best for me? I see Dr Roller in Ft Collins, he told me it is up to me.  My problem is I have a ton of committments throughout summer and fall.  So I don't necessarily have the time to recover from Bypass surgery.  I like the idea of loosing slowly, that way skin might tighten up back, I might not loose soo much hair, I can still take vitamins, etc...   And i really need to short recovery time. I would love to hear your comments.

Bettie, Unless something has changed since my surgery almost 2 years ago, Dr. Fedorak's office doesn't require the protein shakes.  He really recommends you get your protein from food, but he isn't against the shakes. You mentioned that you have UHC for insurance?  I had them, too.  I kid you not, I started all my appointments in June of 2006 and by August I was having surgery.  Hope it goes as well for you!
