I paid out of pocket too! I used Dr. Kirshenbaum in Denver. He only charges $9950.00 and $15.00 for fills after your initial 3 months. I am very pleased with his services. He performs the surgery at two outpatient facilities. One at Parker Adventist Hospital and one near The Medical Center of Aurora. Dr. K is a very experienced, skilled and caring physician.

You really have to do a lot of research into all the WLS. There are several and each one has it's own risks and benefits.
I wanted something that would not permanently alter my body and something that made me accountable - The Lapband is only a tool. There is not malabsorption. You can easily not lose weight with the Band if you're a snacker or a grazer. I am not. I have done extremely well with the Band and am very happy with my decision. I can't say it's been easy. It hasn't. I'm 45 years old, my starting BMI was 63 and I now is 46. I've lost a good amount of weight and I work out regularly. I truly eat whatever I feel like. I just have had to learn to eat slower and take tinier bites. I don't mind getting fills. I've had 3 of them in 11 months. I do see my doctor monthly only by choice. No charge unless I get a fill and then it's only $15.00. I had pre-diabetes, PCOS, hypertension and hypercholesterol. I took 3 meds a day. Now I take none and I am free from all of those issues!
I'm happy with my choice, but I certainly know it has to be a decision that is made specifically for you.

I'm pleased to say that Dr Kirshenbaum is for real! He's great! I had my surgery 1/29/08 and he worked really hard to make it happen for me. I have Malignant Hyperthermia and my first surgery was cancelled. He had to go out of his way and pay out of his own pocket to get things set up for me to have surgery at a different facility. (the outpatient anesthesia dept wasn't comfortable with doing my surgery as an outpatient) Dr. K saved my life! He's absolutely the best! I love Natalie, Marilyn and Mary too! If you have any questions PM me! And visit www.lapbandtalk.com "considering Dr. Kirshenbaum thread" You'll find all of his patients!

Hi,
I'm flying to Denver in two weeks to get my lap band. Everyone keeps asking me if I'm nervous about the surgery and I keep saying I'm not. But I think I am but obsessing about it by convincing myself that the surgeon I sent $10,000 is all a scam and I'm going to get there and it's going to be an empty building. Having trouble verifying information. Any help tips?
THanks,
Melissa

Hi Jermain -
Kelly Elliott runs support groups in many locations around the city - Swedish Hospital, Sky Ridge Hospital, and I think others. She's pretty awesome. Of course, I know there are many, many groups offered - you could just contact various surgeons and ask them, they all offer something. Kelly Elliot can be reached at 303-770-1222 extension 2. Good Luck!

I think that everyone feels almost exactly the way you do. I took my nervous energy out creating a blog about my own Lap band journey - mostly to help myself, but I also have a few friends considering surgery as well, and I thought it might help them. Feel free to check it out if you want - writing it made me feel better, and maybe reading it will make you feel better to.
