Anyone with UnitedHealthcare Choice Plus (with exclusion policy) have any luck getting approved - in spite of the exclusion policy? Any helpful info will be appreciated. My doctor has not yet sent request to UHC, but want to know about any specific and helpful tips that might help "cut to the chase." Thanks --

Hi Jo- I'm not sure re: the exclusion clause in your case. But UHC came thru for me....after making me wait for weeks...and approving practically as I rolled into surgery! Best of luck with them. Cheers, Rusty

Rusty - Thanks for responding. The policy we have has a specific list of things that aren't covered, even if determined to be medically necessary (that seems just weird to me) by a doctor or doctors. However, I have seen a couple of instances where they (UnitedHealthcare) has made exceptions after an appeal was made by the patient. I don't know if there were specific and extraordinary cir****tances that convinced UHC to make the exceptions, but thought I would ask if anyone "out there" has had any experience with this issue directly - just trying to negotiate a process that is already starting out to be difficult. I've gone to the required nutrition class and have scheduled my pre-surgery psych eval (both, I'm told, are prerequisites to the request for approval being sent by the doctor to UHC) - another weird process, as the nutrition class was expensive and not covered by insurance. If I can get through the technical aspects of this process and don't chicken out, it will be amazing enough! Thanks again for your response. I hope to hear from others if they are out there. Advice from those who have been there can't hurt! How do you feel about your surgery and was it painful? I'm a huge wuss with very low pain tolerance ...and a scaredy-cat on top of that.

Hi Jo- Was I in pain from the surgery? No...surprised the heck outta me! Would I do it again? Yes, yes, yes! Is it a lot of hard work? Yes, yes, yes! Other than that, you can read my profile...if you're up for a novel Good luck! Cheers, Rusty

I have UHC and will self-pay. My employer is self insured, which means they decide on what to cover with UHC and they put an exclusion in our policy. They refuse to remove the exclusion. I have tryed for 3 years to have them remove it. They won't do it, so I will self pay. If your policy has and exclusion, try and go to your HR department and see if they will remove it or make an exception for you. I hope you have better success than I have had. I have heard that the exclusion with UHC is the worst. Sorry for the bad news. Check out your insurance policy and talk to your HR department. Hope things work out for you.
