What to take to surgery - I will be 12 hours from home
I am coming from KC for surgery with Dr. Snyder on Nov. 2, We will driving out and flying back , But I have to stay at a hotel until the 1 week checkup and drain removal, . What do I need to take with me to the hospital and for the week long stay? I need your input !
What will I be eating or need while there, or any suggestions. THanks
Good Morning,
I would take my own pillow, just for comfort, I know that it helped me sleep better. chapsitck, and I took my tooth brush and tooth paste. The hospital (skyRidge) had shampoo and soap that I used. I would wait and buy any foods that you may want, when you get here that way you dont have to travel with them. I hated the SF jello and popsicles and that is what you will need the most of and milk, and broth. What ever your surgeon says for you to have that first couple of weeks. I dont know where you are staying but in some hotels you can ask for a room with a fridge or ask to borrow one that they might have. If at all possible have someone stay the first night with you at the hospital, I know that it made me feel better knowing that if something happened my husband was right there and would not have to drive an hour to get to me. I took books, but never even opened them, I slept most of the time and the other times I had visitors or was up trying to walk the halls with out getting sick. I did take my own clothes just because if I am going to be walking the halls I dont want the world to see everything that I have. I hope that this helps some, if you would like you can email me any time at [email protected] and I will try to answer any questions that you may have. I will also keep you up to date on the weather as time gets closer, but I would plan on loose fitting warm clothing.
have a great weekend!!
Much Love,
kris

Your doctor should give you, at your pre-surgery appointment, what you should be able to eat right after surgery. I just made sure everything had no sugar or very low sugar (my doctor said not to have anything with sugar as the first 3 listed ingredients).
Here is what my doctor recommends for the first two weeks: Full Liquids & Pureed Foods - No added sugar full-liquids as tolerated (includes milk, pudding, instant breakfast and strained soup) for meals and snacks. Pureed Foods like Plain Yogurt (non-fat, 1% fat), light flavored yogurt, Cream of Tomato soup (skim milk), SF pudding (skim milk), SF Cocoa, Isopure, and Soy Milk. I found most items at King Soopers. They have a FF and SF Chicken Broth (Krueger Brand). They also have SF Jello & SF Pudding in already made containers. I liked the taste of SF Popsicles, didn't find them diety tasting at all (if you know what I mean). My favorite was always the Fudge Popsicle and they SF ones are really good.
GNC Vitamin store (They have a great Club Discount Program) has Isopure Protein Drink that has 50mg Protein in two scoops and add 8oz Fat Free Milk for 8mgs more for a total of 58mgs per serving. You can split them up for 33mg Protein each (Each scoop of protein has 25mgs of Protein). I really enjoy the Dutch Chocolate and Creamy Vanilla with Non-Fat Milk. Later the Creamy Vanilla has a great variety of options. Like adding fruit and other flavorings for variety (Walmart has several food flavorings that are SF found by the cooking spices). God knows we hate to be bored with what we eat..LOL Isopure is suppose to be good mixed with water, I haven't tried it, but I hear it still tastes good.
Here are a few things I think you will need in the hotel. Not sure if you will have a room with a small kitchen with a refrigerator, stove or microwave.
1. Small Electric Blender or Shaker Cup
2. Small pan for heating soup or small bowl for microwave heating.
3. Shot Glass for drinking and measuring. (Pyrex makes one with measurements, that I just love. I found them at the home store Bed, Bath and Beyond, if you have one locally).
4. Utensils (for soup and stirring).
5. Small Pitcher (for making SF Crystal Light, SF Kool Aid or SF Tang or you can buy premade bottles of Crystal Light)
6. Sipper Cups
7. Chewable Vitamins & all other vitamins (I have made a list, email me if you are interested).
8. Pill/Vitamin Crusher (Walmart- are you seeing a pattern )
This is all I could think of right now. Most of the items are small enough to fit in your suitcase for your flight home. These are just recommendations to help you plan, please be sure to check with your doctor and follow everything he tells you. Dr. Snyder is not my doctor, so I am not sure what his recommendations are for you. Just so you know, I am not in the medical profession. This is just information that I have researched and collected on my own.
I hope this is helpful. If you have any other questions, please email me and I will see if I can help.
God Bless and Take Care,
RMB
