I have a date!
I got a call today from Dr. Thomas Brown's assistant letting me know that I have been scheduled for surgery on September 27, 2004!
I will have a laproscopic RnY!
I have my surgery consultation on July 29th at PSL.
I really feel good about all of this. I've been working really hard to prepare myself for this including documenting every piece of food that has passed my lips for the last month and a half. I've lost 23 pounds in the process and I've learned so much about what motivates me to eat.
Anyway, I've been a semi-lurker for long enough. I thought I should let everyone know my good news!
Thanks to everyone who has provided me with good information and insights over the last few months!
Always,
Paul
Congratulations! I'm always glad to hear success stories at Kaiser. My BMI is too high for their surgeon, so I have to lose 100 lbs before I get to start attending the classes.
Sigh. If I could lose 100 lbs, I wouldn't need surgery.
I'm also glad to hear Kaiser is going to start offering lap
RNY. Are the 12-week classes useful, or just a bunch of
hoop jumping?
Hooray again on your good news!

I really found the classes to be worth while. I learned a ton about the surgery, the post op diet, nutrition in general, and most worth-while, why I eat what I eat.
The group discussion leaders were awesome at helping people with all of their concerns and things that came to light during the class. I got infinitely more out of this class than the Slim for Life class that I took. It also gave us a connection to about 18 other people that were in the same boat, people who are also in line to have surgery.
Hang in there and just try journalling what you eat that's what has provided me with the weight loss I've had so far.
Good Luck,
Paul
Congratulations, Paul!!
You'll be having your surgery on my 50th birthday, so I'll be sure to remember to send you good thoughts. Kudos for hanging in there with Kaiser. I wasn't patient enough to go through their program, although it looks like they have revamped it considerably since I first applied, became terribly discouraged, and ended up paying out of pocket. I'll look forward to meeting you at the post op support group.
Feel free to contact me any time if you have questions or need support. It's going to be a whole new life for you, and I'm thrilled on your behalf.

Congratulations Paul!!! You're off to a wonderful start having lost 23 pounds already Is there any info you can pass on about how you learned what motivates you to eat and why you eat the way you do?? I know for me this will be my biggest hurdle. I know I am a stress eater... what have you learned to help you combat that? Feel free to email me privately if you like, but I think that others here would probably be interested as well. If you do reply (and I truly hope you do ) just keep in mind that I wont be able to read or answer emails for a bit because my surgery is tomorrow. Best wishes for your continued success (how cool is that?? You are already a success story and you haven't even had the surgery!!! )
