Hi, I am in the process of getting this surgery. I noticed that several of you had said that Advil is not allowed post surgery. I MUST have ibuprofen for my menstrual cramps and YES it HAS to be ibuprofen is that an absolute that you cannot have ibuprofen?

Hey girl... I was just floating and noticed no one responded... I think its more just that it can irritate your tummy. My WLS doc suggested that I use gel tab motrin for some issues i was having. So I think its probably not going to hurt ONCE in while but not make a big habit of it. You should probably ask your WLS doc what he would suggest. Thats the safest method but if your not around your doc and need a fast fix, I know I have used what EVER i can get my hands one to relieve that pain with so far no problems. Talk with your doc to be safest tho *hugs* deb 260/155/140 revision

My surgeon never said that I could not have Ibuprofen, but I genreally tend to stay away from the products in that medical family anyways because they have always been hard on my tummy and digestion. having said that, I do occassionally take one if I have pain that normal tylenol would not work on. it is the long term use that bothers me both pre and post op. Check with your doc and see if he would allow an occassional usage for mentral things and see what he says or any alternatives. Melisa Morrison Success is the BEST revenge!

Hello, just thought I'd chime in here. I have to admit, I don't remember if I was told no advil. I was told no TIME RELEASE anything, that can be dangerous. But I think the big concern with any medication is that they all have side effects and any pain reliever has the potential of hurting your tummy. I have taken advil and tylenol, and an ER doc once "prescribed" high doses of advil because I was having weird chest pains. If that was not a good thing to recommend to a bypass patient, he sure didn't know it. Of course, we can't expect any doctor who is not a WLS surgeon to know about our procedure and the impacts of it. Overall, I can't imagine this would be an issue that would keep you from surgery. There are lots of ways to fight pain, we'll find you one. Kathryn
