Check all the forums for the various surgery.

Look for recurring problems, and folks requiring revisions to achieve their weight loss goals.

I selected the sleeve, because I didn't want to go through the fills and unfills attendant with the band, or the possible slippage of the band, gastric erosion problems, and port shifting.

I was not interested in malabsorption that comes with the RNY, as I use various meds and supplements.  I had the sleeve at the age of 71, and enjoy the "set it and forget it" aspect of this surgery type.

So, please study the various types of surgery, and find the best one you can live with, and will fit with your lifestyle.

Fred

Hi Dolly,
My insurance would not cover the VSG ,  so I did not have the option. You can read all about it by going to "Surgery Types" up in the left hand corner of this page. I am 53 and had health issues too. I was told by one bariatric Dr. that people over 50 have an increased rate of mortality when undergoing more invasive surgery like RNY, so that is when I chose lapband.

Like Phred said, you should study all your options. Ask your family Dr. and your insurance co. if you have insurance. I had BC/BS and they are picky. All of the surgeries have certain advantages and disadvantages and none are perfect- some are even ment for first stage WLS and require a second operation later.

Good Luck!

You really have to do a lot of research into all the WLS.  There are several and each one has it's own risks and benefits.

I wanted something that would not permanently alter my body and something that made me accountable - The Lapband is only a tool.  There is not malabsorption.  You can easily not lose weight with the Band if you're a snacker or a grazer.  I am not.  I have done extremely well with the Band and am very happy with my decision.  I can't say it's been easy.  It hasn't. I'm 45 years old, my starting BMI was 63 and I now is 46.  I've lost a good amount of weight and I work out regularly.  I truly eat whatever I feel like.  I just have had to learn to eat slower and take tinier bites.  I don't mind getting fills.  I've had 3 of them in 11 months.  I do see my doctor monthly only by choice.  No charge unless I get a fill and then it's only $15.00.  I had pre-diabetes, PCOS, hypertension and hypercholesterol.  I took 3 meds a day. Now I take none and I am free from all of those issues!

I'm happy with my choice, but I certainly know it has to be a decision that is made specifically for you.
