Hello and welcome to the boards!
You will find so much wonderful information and support on here. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't jump on and learn something new! If you are looking for a doc might I suggest Dr.Snyder in Denver. He has free conferences. The next being on Dec.13 and he is an amazing man and doctor. I went to the conference in Oct. and will be going back to the one on the 13th with my husband and parents. Just thought I'd throw my 2 cents in here as there is nobody else that I would consider going to. But thats just me :) Best of luck in your journey!

Welcome Melody!!   Research all your options and take the best road for YOU!! Nobody can make the decision for you--but whatever you choose, I'm sure you'll be greatly successful.  We're doing a Colorado brunch at Mimis this Saturday if you can come!!

Welcome, do your research and find the procedure that is right for you.  If you want to stay close to home, I would look into  Colorado Springs Surgical Associates...Drs. Fisher, Fedorhek, Nagy, and Bordelon.  I had dr. Nagy, and he also just took out my gall bladder, but dr, Fedorhek assisted on my wls. they are all wonderful people.  Good luck!!

I am using Colorado Springs Surgical Associates too.  They area a center of excellance as well.  Everyone there are very nice. My doctor is Dr. Perlman.  She is fairly new to this office, but has been doing surgeries for a long time.
The first and most important step is making the decision to have WLS.  I chose to have the Lap Band as it has less complications and is more of a tool to help me gain control of my life.
I am proud of you for investigating your options.  I pray that it works out for you.

I just can't wait until February; until my benefits kick in.  I am soooo ready to move onto living a healthy lifestyle.  Thanks for letting me know there's a woman doctor in the office.  I don't know why, but I feel more comfortable w/women.

Happy Holidays,
Mel

Hi Melody
Hope you will check the type of insurance you have- my BC/BS wanted me to go out of state to get my WLS at their "Blue Center of Excellence" and it was only by a technicality that I was able to get the surgery in the state of Colo. without it being considered "out of network".
Merry Christmas!

Yeah, I've already checked it out.  We have Aetna through work.  They will pay for one WLS and two cosmetic surgeries to cover the flaps leftover.

How weird that BC/BS would want you to do that- did you ask them when they wanted you to do that if they were covering your airfare, hotel stays, and meals? LOL!!  I'm glad you found the loophole.  How's things going for you now?

Hi Mel
Yes BC/BS would've paid $5000.00 to cover all of my trips including bringing a friend (caregiver) , meals and lodging for both round trips. Actually I went to Dallas to set up with a surgeon there first before I was directed by BC/BS that Colo. had opened 3 blue centers.  My technicality loophole was that I saw Dr Metz  in Denver and had gotten a surgery date and then CBSI let the contract expire after that.  I was lucky because I was dreading getting surgery out of state, the ride home would've been way too much to handle!

I am doing fine, thank you. My first fill is not as restrictive as I'd like, but thats why you need to go back each month for "fills" where they inject saline into the band to tighten it. Some have said it takes two or three fills before the band hits the"sweet spot"where they can get the most benefit from the band. You can read about the process up above under "forums">surgical forums>lap band. You can research all the surgical types there and decide for yourself. I chose lapband because I am over 50 and my surgeon told me that people over 50 are more prone to die from the other types of surgery.

Gosh I hope my insurance covers some cosmetic surgery, I'll have to check it out !!

Anyway here's to a  Happy New Year for you and everyone !! Melody, check your messages under "My OH"  up above on main toolbar, I dropped you a note awhile ago.

Good morning!
I am considering the surgery myself, but am considering having it done in Mexico instead. As much as I would love to have it done locally, I can't afford it, its twice as expensive. The numerous insurance plans I have had won't cover the surgery because I have no health problems other than being overweight. I have had the following insurance carriers: Kaiser, Aetna, Humana, and Blue Cross. My DH works at USAFA as a civilian hence the numerous carriers (we get to choose yearly who we want). So, I am at the point where I have researched (extensively) going to Mexico to have the surgery. The package plans are anywhere from $6000-&12000 to include the surgery, hospital stay, hotel stay, transportation and flight.
I think this is the route I am going to take and now have to choose WHEN. I teach here in the Pikes Peak area and I am trying to coincide it with our school schedule. I might end up doing it during spring break.
I would appreciate any communication, tips/advice, and stories!

Hi
I thought I didn't have any other health problems other than obesity until I went and got a sleep study done and then discovered I had sleep apnea and other breathing problems. Dr Metz of CBSI in Denver will do lapband for $9000.00 and it includes the first year of fills etc..and they will finace it for you.  With insurance the surgery cost me $400.00 . Most BC/BS insurance companies require a BMI over 40 or a co-morbidity but not both.
Good luck
