I'm asking on behalf of my mom. She's interested in getting gastric bypass and wondering what the requirements are. She will qualify with her BMI and co-morbs. Her concern is a six-month supervised diet and if her years on Weigh****chers will count as a supervised diet with BCBS? Any information will help! Thanks! Katie

Katie, Sorry I don't have any information about BCBS/CO.  Just wishing your mom the best of luck! Crystal

I have BCBS Federal and I am not required for the 6 month diet.  They did ask for diet history, had to see the Nutrionist and Psychologist.  You can have the Doctor office call the insurance company for her and see what her requirements are. Sue

Hello, I had my surgery in February. I have BCBS too. They were really easy to work with. It took no time to get an approval. The 6 months isn't required. It's only suggested. I had my surgery at Rose Medical with Dr. Snyder in Denver. As long as she has a record of trying to loose weight is just fine. Just have her make a list of the different diets she's tried. It was easy and painless.  Maria

First thing to check is if her specific policy covers WLS.  Each employer decides what will be covered and what will be excluded.  I would just call them and ask if it's covered and if so what hte requirements are.

Hello, I had gastric bypass and have BCBS. You don't have to have 6 months worth of tracked weight loss attempts. Just a record of attempts. I went through Dr. Michael Snyder in Denver. It was a breeze to get approved. They do require, a Pych eval, Nutrition eval, letter from the surgeon and the weight loss attempts. I'm sure she has tried everything like us all. Have her write those attempts down with approximate year and costs. Hope this helps.
