Okay, so I know dumping is quite a normal side effect of the surgery and can expect it.  I would like to know from all you post op folks how often it has occured to you?  What happens when it comes on?  How long does it last?  What each persons trigger is for dumping, usually sugar overdose I hear, but some people may have different triggers.   What about any other side effects?  I know hair loss is a problem for some, gas, but would like to know individual experiences?

So far...one month post op NEVER!!  I have not experienced any dumping, but then I have also been very careful to follow the eating plan from my doc and nut.  I have not tried anything with a lot of sugar, but have had some deep fried things...had mozzarella sticks as that was the only thing I felt safe with....did not eat most of the breading, but did eat some of it.  So knock on wood..no dumping yet.  Gayle

I don't tend to even try sugar but the carb loaded food makes me feel horrible. Heart raceing general feeling that death should be happening and I have to lay down and I fall fast asleep. The BIG DUMMIE I am I have tested thismore than once.        Both times that I have gotten sick off of sugar  that stick in my mind. were accidents.Once I drank a liptongreen tea in the dark in the car. Got home and relized it was regular and not diet.        The second time was this morning.I love Mcdonalds new iced coffee. But for some reason they can't seem to handle the cream and coffee only over ice. I stress everytime no sweetner no sugar no coffe syurp.NOT ONCE has it been correct.Today I took a big swallow out of the straw and I swallowed straight french vanilla syurp. After the trip inside to say hello me again and correct the order I had to put it in the fridge while the shakes and blaa feeling went away.I wonder how much sugar is in coffee syurp?Or maybe because it was in liquid form???? Have a great one Amy

I am five years out and fat and sugar trigger mine. I ate some popcorn with some butter on it last night in the movie and I thought I was dying!!!!! Nausea, sweats, headache, sleepiness, Can I say it is an instant sleeping pill. I can tolerate some sugar but not a lot. Carla

I'm one of those who hasn't dumped - I'm 9 1/2 months out and have not been sick once, which I have to say I am thrilled about! It has been a pretty smooth process for me. And I eat pretty well, I sometimes treat myself to little snacks or something that is fried, but that's the extent of my experimentation. And it is rare. The side effects I have had is LOTS of hair loss - thank goodness I had lots of hair to start with, but even my hair dresser was shocked at home much I lost. It is finally starting to grow back, for which I am grateful! I also have some gas, but not all the time. The main problem for me is I have become hypoglycemic. I didn't have diabetes before surgery so this has been a surprise. I just make sure i eat every 3-4 hours otherwise I get sick. I carry protein bars with me all the time, just in case. Other than that it has been pretty smooth sailing - I would most definitely do it all over again!

Hair loss was (is) my main enemy.  Nothing really to prevent it, outside of a wing and a prayer. LOL. I wouldn't call what I've experienced really a stero-typical dumping syndrome.  The only time I've gotten the headache, sweats, and nausea was with milk products.  I'm OK with cheese and cottage cheese, but to drink a few ounces of milk...forget it!  That's all she wrote.  Me and pork are NOT friends.  The NUT said it was probably because of the high fat content that most pork products have.Who knows?  I just steer clear of it.  Dry chicken will send me the bathroom to , too.  Since we can't drink while we eat, there's no place else for it to go.  I can eat sugars.  My pouch starts to gurgle and make a bunch of noise, but I don't get sick. Gas?  OMG!  Killer gas.  I feel like Pumba from the Lion King some times.  "I can clear the Savannah after every meal..."  It's awful at times. Oh well, all of this is a small price to pay to become healthy again.

Hi! Haven't had too much problem with dumping, but I have not been able to eat pork at all.  I was at a graduation party and that is all there was, so I had just a taste and that was enough.  The usual for me is sweating, feel horrible and just want to lay down and close my eyes for awhile.  I haven't really pushed it with sweets or that, but carbs are the other thing that I found causes me to dump. I found that if I kept my protein up at 100 grams a day, the hair loss wasn't but a little bit. I think that the loss I did experience was more from being under for over 4 hours of surgery. I have done that with every surgery that I have had.  Gas has been an issue though.  I have to really watch what is going in so that it doesn't come right out the other side.   Hope that this helps! Hugs, Dee
