One week post-op and I am STARVING!
Hi all. Was wondering if anyone had some helpful suggestions...My surgery was "textbook" according to my surgeon and other than one mild fever, I have had not one complication. (Knock on wood) I am one week out today and am already walking to the end of the block and am having no trouble getting all my liquid in for the day. My problem is that my stomach is growling CONSTANTLY. Last night, my husband could hear it on the other side of the room! I have tried all the tricks we've been taught; eating slowly, no drinking 30 minutes before or after eating, switching up my liquids to get some variety...I don't know how to not be hungry!!! Could it be that I am expending more calories being up and around and active so soon after surgery? I know myself and I cannot succeed if my stomach is in a perpetual state of growl. Help!
You know, my digestive track also makes lots of noise, but I wouldn't really call it growling. Is it really hunger or just noise? The liquid diet is tough since it is starvation, and it's just a big adjustment for your body. Your stomach just hasn't gotten the hint that you aren't "eating" right now. I am sure it will get better once you can start soft foods, so I would just give it some time. Walk whatever feels comfortable for you. Rest is the biggest thing in the first two weeks, so make sure you do enough of that too. I am 3 weeks out, and it will get better!

Hi Tracey
I would guess that you are hearing your digestion/bowel sounds. I experienced the same noises and my nutritionist said it is your bowels getting use to all the changes. You may actually hear these noises for several more weeks. I kept thinking I was starving when actually it was digestion sounds. I had my surgery on December 20, 2006 and once in awhile I still hear the sounds but it was a lot in the beginning.
My Sister had her surgery on Feb 19th and experiences the same thing. I totally understand your statement about how can you suceed....try to remember that now we eat to live not live to eat and as long as you are giving your body fluids or pureed foods as directed try to ignore the growls or sounds. It does get easier I promise.
I have lost 79 pounds and it isn't easy at times but remember our bodies went through a major change and it is adjusting. I hope this helps. Keep in touch with me okay?
Lorie and Tracy, I am four and half years out and still hear them. Many times everyone around me hears them, everyone typically says the same thing, you must be really hungry. I am so used to it that is a qick yes and move on. A friend had her surgery 10 years ago and she goes thru the same thing. Well better run now.
Thanks Lorie,
I saw the surgeon today and all is well. Stitches came out and I lost 15 pounds!!! I am floored to say the least!! The surgeon suggested drinking a mouthful of skim milk and the stomach issues should calm down...if not, he says they generally go away in a few weeks. I am encouraged, but still fearful of having just had such a dramatic surgery and I still think I'm hungry. Today was the first time that I was really bothered by cooking smells in my house (I have a husband and a teenage son) and it really got to me that they could eat and I couldn't. It made me want it all the more. I think I'm being too hard on myself. It's only been 8 days and I want everything to be different now. Thanks again for answering.

Get used to the stomach noises. I am over two years out from surgery and I still have that happen pretty much every day. I dont think its because I am hungry because 90 percent of the time it's right after I eat. You gotta remember we did have surgery and they did quite a bit of rearranging in there so it's just one thing you learn to live with.
