Obtaining Private Health Insurance Post WLS

Okay, I've been round and round about this -- but here's what I found: 1) Pre-op I was too heavy to be covered under Anthem BC/BS -- so I was denied! (Although I got coverage for DH & kids) 2) Self-paid for my WLS in April and now I'm only merely 'overweight' (pounds still dropping). 3) Reapplied to BC/BS and was DENIED! Because I have had WLS! WHAT? I was told that I can reapply after FIVE YEARS!!!! Yikes. That really truely stinks. I have found that Cover Colorado will cover me -- they can't deny anyone. Nice safety net for those who need insurance and can afford to pay. However they want $500/mo for just me. It's a decent policy -- but way too expensive. Just wanted to share my experience and find out if anyone has other ideas for my current delima. Thanks for letting me spew! Lola

Lola, Have you checked out Kaiser. They are usually pretty reasonable. I had them for a couple of years and I liked it. Hope that helps. April

I checked with Kaiser several years ago and they won't cover me because I live in Grand County and they don't have any facilities here. So I guess because they'd end up having to pay outside of their own network, they won't do it. My sister had Kaiser for years and really liked it -- even with all it's faults. Thanks for the idea anyway -- I may check again, just to see if anything has changed. Lola

Do check again (if you haven't already). I have Kaiser and they have made a lot of changes recently such as now using Penrose Hospital in Colorado Springs for WLS because it is a Center of Excellence, also we can now use WalMart for prescriptions. It never hurts to ask! Liz
