Looking forward to seeing you as we close out 2013. I hope the holiday season is going well for you. I'm struggling a bit being too tempted by the treats so I look forward to refocusing asap.
East Bay Bariatric is an independent peer support group. No need to register; just show up. Free. All surgery types welcome. It's just us patients.

The DS is the Duodenal Switch. There's a message board specifically for that surgery here on OH. If you want to check it out, here's a quick link. You can also check out dsfacts.com to learn more about the surgery. They have a list comparing the DS to the RNY too that is really good to read.

I'm really new here but I also have medical. I called medical last week and asked if they cover WLS and they said yes,! How excited I was when she told me that.
i don't know what DS means but they told me I will first have to make an appointment with my primary doctor and tell him I need a referral for gastric bypass. I'm done those steps all ready just waiting on approval or my 6 month weight loss that some times medical has you do..
I live in Folsom...I asked my doctor to refer me for the surgery. My height 5'4, I was 258 lbs, diabetic, no other problems, when I asked for the referral in September 2013. When I went to the surgeon I was at 253, I had to get down to 238. I am at 231 now and my RNY surgery will be on December 26, with Dr Yemunula. You do have to meet their goal weight for surgery, you have to keep a food and exercise diary, attend a minimum of 1 group meetings, have a psych eval, ekg, chest xray and blood work. When you reach your goal weight they send you to the psych, then to the nurse to schedule your surgery. I have not experienced any problems through Kaiser.
I wish you the best of luck. I know I am getting excited about the surgery!

I know Medi-Cal previously did not cover DS. Do they now all the sudden?

If you are self pay (most plastics are) I would go to Dra. Nastia Gonzalez in Mexicali, MX. She is a professor there teaching plastics. She's fantastic. That is who I will go to eventually. My friends have already been there.
Hello HappyAddy,
I had my RNY surgery performed by Dr. Coirin in Modesto in 2004. Dr Coirin is an excellent doctor and I would recommend him to anyone seeking WLS. He was kind and caring and that helped to calm any fears I had at the time.
Best wishes to you,
Gina
