The process through midical can be very annoying.  I currently have Alemeda Health through medical and I have a surgery date of 02/14/2012 but I started the process back in June.  I originally went to a seminar at my local hospitals bariatric surgery program. They originally said they would accept my insurance and I would just need a referral from my doctor.  I made a appointment with my doctor and she had no problem with giving me a referral for the surgery.  It took 3 weeks to get in to see the bariatric doctor but a few days before my appointment they called and said that they wouldn't accept my referral through my doctor and I would either need to go to a new primary doctor they work with or get a new referral from my doctor to what every participating bariatric program they work through.  I contacted my insurance directly and they advised me that either I switched primary or get a new referral from my primary for the bariatric program they worked with which was a hour away. I liked my primary doctor and after a few days of considering I didn't want to change to someone new so I got my new deferral.  I then had to start the process all over again and go to another seminars with the new bariatric program.  To say the least be prepared to have lots of bumps along the way in the process. It has now been 7 months and I finally got my final approval and surgery date.  My suggestion is to contact the insurance directly let them know who your primary doctor is, then find out exactly what you need to do.   I was lucky to speak with a lady at my insurance who looked into everything for me and got me on the right road.
