Good Luck
There is no evidence-based reason to make people lose 10% of their weight. Now, some people find it easy so it's easier to just lose it than to fight, but I know someone who took FOUR YEARS to lose theirs. That's 4 years they could have been enjoying better health and a better quality of life and I think it's medical malpratice on Kaiser's part to force everyone to lose 10% of their body weight.

Absolutely Kaiser is practicing malpractice! Kasier told me it's not Kaiser, it's the surgeons who will not do the surgery, unless the patient loses 10%. It took about a year after I started the apeal process. I also tried to lose the wieght for over a year, and nothing.....I thought I would never have gotten this surgery, but thanks to a OH member, she posted and told me about DMHC.............My surgen said my surgery was text book perfect, im almost 4 years out and still have my weight off....Im between 125 - 130 lbs............
Did you believe them? I don't. I can't see how every single one of their surgeons all agree on this when so many surgeons outside of Kaiser don't agree.

Here's the DMHC's position paper on required pre-op weight loss:

I believe the rational behind the pre-op diet is 1. to see if you are serious about committing to losing weight.. the surgery doesn't do all the work for you. You have to change eating habits and really commit to a lifestyle change. and 2. To shrink your liver. Do I think a LIQUID diet is required? No. Not at all. I never had to suffer through a liquid diet.. not before surgery or after. My pre-op diet was high protein, low carb, no sugar, no caffeine. I was never hungry.
I am in no way defending Kaiser, I am just saying that for *me* the pre-op diet was an eye opener and great preparation for what was to come. If your eating habits are the issue, then it might be a good idea to confront those before surgery. If it's a medical issue (metabolic problems or whatever) then it is completely unreasonable for them to expect you to be able to lose the weight and you should definitely fight it.
Either way, I wish you luck!!
