Does anyone know or have heard if Protein Powder will build up and cause a problem to your kidneys ??  My doctor mentioned it to me, and it got me worried........but so many women have been on the Protein Powder and shakes, i have not heard a thing,...........so hope this is not a dumb question.

No question is ever dumb!  I have not heard that myself, but have you talked to your surgeon or the nutritionist?  Just a suggestion.  I certainly will ask my Dr when I see him in June.

Hugs,

I've attended multiple support meetings each month for 5 years. The only thing I've heard negative about protein powder is that people with Gout cannot use it.  Protein powder can also be added to foods which may releive you worries.  DAVE

There is nothing special about protein powders that can harm your kidneys. It's just milk proteins and vitamins, basically.

But too much protein makes your kidneys work harder. That's any kind of protein whether it's a powder or meat or whatever. But "too much" is a LOT of protein. Like hundreds of grams a day. More than any of us will ever have to worry about.

You need to be proactive about your health post op.  Always get a written lab report, NEVER rely on a phone call that says your vitamin levels are OK--you need numbers.  Whenever I have any lab reviews or concerns about other issues with my doctors, I ask questions.  I had a review with my bariatric liason doctor of my insurance company a few months ago, and I had questions. She actually gave me a link to read the data online so I could understand what she was saying in detail. DAVE
