Very scary night and day
I received a call on Monday that my mom had been at emergency all day. I was out of town for work, so my sister did not want to worry me. They did not know what was wrong and kept doing tests on my mom. Finally at 9PM they decided they would admit her and have the Doctor read all the tests and do more in the morning. At 1AM (Tuesday) they called my sister (who had just been home half an hour), that they need consent for emergency surgery my mom had taken a turn.
They took my mom to surgery (lap thank god) and found her bowel had died. They told my sister that if they could not find what was wrong during lap surgery they would open her up and put a colostomy bag. We now know the bowel had been dead for quite some time and we are lucky it did not perforate!
No one ever told us there was problems with the bowel, mom had been complaining since October about her stomach. They had done an endoscope last week and found nothing. Needless to say we are so happy they found the bowel problem before it perforated. However, there was still lots of warning for them to find this before my mom got to the stage of a 104 temperature, infection and her not knowing who anyone was or what was going on they found the problem.
Point being--don't let the doctors tell you nothing is wrong. She kept going back, and they just prescribed prilosec and telling her to adjust her diet. We are lucky she is still with us and hopefully there are no after affects that haunt her. We pray she comes home by Friday and is strong once again.
