RNY Absorption

I'm almost 5 years out and I just learned that the body adjusts to the new way of absorbing food and therefore, years after the RNY the body can absorb much more calories than what we thought?

Does this sound right?  A friend of mine attended an OH conference a bit a go and shared this information and I recently read an article regarding this new finding/study?

Regardless, after whatever WLS procedure once goes with, we have to work hard at keeping off additional weight and choose to live a health lifestyle by eating the right foods, exercise, etc.

MAN! And I always thougth I'd be able to get away and eat extra things here and there and wa**** down with water....WRONG!

That is very interesting. Thank you for sharing that information. We all need to know and be reminded of that.

How is the baby? They sure change your life and for the better.

I can't wait to ask my surgeon about this. Apparently this is new studies that is coming to surface and is gaining lots of interest. It makes sense since that the body is/has adjusted to absorbing.

In 2007 I had MAJOR complications with severe abdominal pains. I really think it had to do with the absorption part because each time I ate, I had to go to ER. Between 2007 & 2008, I think I visited the ER about 20 times. Everyone knew me pretty well at Kaiser.  I just think that my body was trying to re-adjust to a new way of absorbing food....As of today, my surgeon, Radiologists, and my PCP don't know the cause of my pains....

Alanis is doing wonderful! She now weighs 11 lbs and will be 5 months in December. Many think she looks like me. I agree :-)  Anna and I are enjoying her every moment.

It is amazing how our bodies work. My husband is a nurse and I am always asking him to explain things to me.

I am glad Alanis is doing so well. Children are such a gift. Enjoy every stage, they grow so fast. My "baby" will be 28 tomorrow!

You, Ana, and Alanis have a great Thanksgiving.

I knew that.  When I hit about the 3 yr mark my surgeon's PA told me that by now my body had adapted to the RNY and that I can expect to absorb pretty much all the calories I take in so gaining weight now isn't a hard thing to do.  I really have to watch what I eat to maintain and REALLY cut back if I want to loose.  I'm still 10lb over goal but at 6+ yrs out and still 100+ down...I'm ok with my weight.

I have heard this also and my surgeon did confirm it.  My surgeon stress the importance of keeping a healthy life style and not slipping back to old food habits.

 Thanks for the info Gus.

I have not heard this, but yet, I know of many people that have posted on the site, or that I have run across that have mentioned their weight gain.

As with any diet, surgery, etc. you can always gain the weight back.  I would imagine with WLS it would probably be much easier as we (or I do anyway) tend to push therefore stretching the pouch.  Since I have been off, I have paid very close attention to how much I am putting on my plate.  Alas, the scale has moved down 5 lbs.  Woo Hoo  For a minute I thought I was done losing weight, but it started again (115 lbs. to date and over 50" total).

Gus, you truly are an inspiration to me and many others as well.   You are so very dedicated to your workouts and you change it up which helps with maintenance.  I on the other hand have gotten lazy and stopped my walking all together.  I am actually looking forward to january when I think I will be healed enough to get involved with a Zumba class.  I am also considering joining an adult volleyball team at the local HS.

Wishing everyone on the OH boards and their families a very Happy Thanksgiving.  If you are traveling please be safe.

I'm wondering if we absorb the carbs, but not the vitamins and protein as much...That's what I've heard.  I miss DX on the Men's Forum...He was always up to date on the latest info.  I try to stuff myself with vegetable much of the time...knowing they are good for me and to keep the pouch full.  When I eat crap, they counter balance it.  If it's true...Just another reason to try and stay away from simple carbs...

Hey how are ya! So where is DX?

Anyhow, yeah...that's a good strategy that I've done to; stuff myself with good foods to fill up the pouch before I dig into the ugly foods...you know what I mean :-)

Interesting findings huh? The person who had gone to the WLS conference mentioned the RNY absorption thing is something new that many WLS surgeons are finding...WA WA WA...LOL
