1 week Post Op

Looking for some advice here.  I am 1 week post op from the RNY surgery.  I have been in terrible pain since I had surgery.  The gas pain is horrible.  Had surgery on 10-25 was discharged 10-27 and then readmitted for possible obstruction on 10-28 then discharged on 10-29.  I have not had any relief.  I have been walking walking walking to get this stabbing gas pain out.  It is more painful on the left side.  When I was readmitted they said that I had Ileus of the bowels.  Basically my bowels were asleep.  I have farted a few times and burped but can't seem to get the gas out.  I might feel good in the morning and as they day progresses I just get more bloated and uncomfortable.  I have barely gotten my Boost glucose control in.  How can I drink when I am so full from the gas.  Any ideas to help?  Am I the only one having this much pain even at 1 week out?

If you don't drink water, you'll end up back in the hosptial with dehydration. Dehydration is the most common reason for readmission to the hospital as a post op.  Gas pain may be around for near a week post op.  The surgincal gas take time to dissipate, and walking helps your body move "your innards" around, causing the gas pains to subside.  You might change positions when you're laying down--try resting on both sides and on your back.  I still can get some releif from gas discomfort by rotating my body position in bed.  DAVE

RNY on 07/14/09 with
 Congrat's on your surgery.

At the beginning it is going to be hard to get all your protein in, but PLEASE be sure to drink water.  You do not want to be dehydrated.

As for gas, I did not experience this after my RNY, however after a hernia repair last week, OH YEA, the gas pains were there big time.  Incision was not a problem, just the gas.  The walking helps but at the same time, it moves things around causing the gas to move around.  This will go away.

I never realized after all the surgeries I have had until last week, that the anesthesia given really dries you up.  The gas pains come first, then maybe a day later you will begin to pass gas.  It literally too me 1.5 days before I could urinate, and almost 3 days to have a BM.

Praying you do not have an obstruction, and that you are relieved of your gas pain soon (no pun intended).

I can't add anymore advice but I can tell you it does get better with time. Oh I did think of something try placing hot wash clothes on your tummy. When I have gas rubbing my tummy also helps. Good luck and if it is really bad keep calling your surgeon.

Did your doctor give you something for gas?  There are prescriptions that help.  Even over the counter stuff as well.  It was an emergency room issue for me too.
Also i would consider that the Boost may have gas causing ingredients....milk based etc??
You don't know how your insides have changed yet or what or how it will react to stuff you've had no problems with in the past.
Taking pain meds are a double edged sword as they can constipate so really drink the water and take a stool softner as constipation with gas in not fun.

Good luck and welcome to the losers bench!
