Liquid Codeine Major Reaction...... Anyone Else?

I did something to my back this weekend...maybe it was walking around applehill with heels, i dunno buuuut....
I took some liquid codeine I had up in the cabinet.  Within 10 minutes I was in such extreme pain I couldn't stand up straight.  Felt worse than a gallbladder attack!  It subsided after about 10 minutes and then if I rolled over in bed it started all over again.

I didnt get any other symptoms, not diarrea or nausea other than just the pain making me feel sick.  I almost went to the ER but didnt want to go all the way to Fremont and keep my hubby up all night.
I had 3 rounds of this stabbing pain right below my sternum. Then could not sleep for hours.  Finally got to bed around 3 and woke at 6:30 so Im off to a nap.

I never had a reaction to codeine in the past like that even after surgery though I did switch to loritab after surgery due to constipation. 

Has anyone else had severe reaction to codeine after surgery??  Is it the sugar, (though I dont dump on anything sugary eaten)??

Hi Deb,

I hope your feeling better. I would suggest that you give your doctor a call and just mention what happened. For all the years I have given narcotics I have never seen or heard from patients that kind of reaction to medication. It could be something else and it was just a coincidence that is happened after you took the medication. Just to be on the safe side. You just never know with our changed GI tracts.

I think I will shoot her an email about it.  I considered that It maybe unrelated but it happened so quickly after i took it.

that is the same feeling I had when the acid backed up in my pouch.   Is it the same stuff they gave you after surgery?   They gave me liquid vicodin. 

I'm glad to hear you are doing better.  Let me know what Dr. chu thinks. 

I think I got it first but it constipates so I asked for the liquid Vicodin.
I will email her tomorrow and see what she thinks.

Do you still have your gallbladder? I am glad that  you are going to contact your doctor. I would stay away from the liquid codeine just in case. Have a good nap!

I w ill be stealing my hubbies vicodin he takes for his back at night!  No codeine for me!
I had my gallbladder removed years ago but the pain was worse.

Didn't get my nap....buyer buyer #5 called just as I fell asleep so I had to get up and bath the puppy and get her bag ready to go home :( 
then my duaghter had a softball game and now im making a quick dinner so I can crash.
Gotta be up early tomorrow , blah. 

I had mine removed years ago as well. Sorry you did not get a nap today. You will probably crash tonight. I am allergic to vicodin. I break out in hives and itch something terrible!

Tell your doctor... and as for the codine,,,, I hate the taste. It reminds me of ameretto,,, I wanted to barf every time I took it, but I had to.
It i made with sugar free liquid... so I did not dump

I was given a cough med by an E.R. doc that works with my surgeon..promethazine with codeine...I don't have the extreme pain but it does burn! I refuse to take it unless I am about to stop breathing from coughing lol.  I actually had to tough out my cold with Niquil and dumping - at least I was asleep when the symptoms came about. (and thank God I woke up for the toilet part!!)
