7 weeks out - no protein supplement..??
Okay, I've yet to be able to choke down a protein powder!! I try and try with no avail. I keep seeing ppl say they have protein coffee..but how do you mix it?? I know even my stinky decaff (yuk) will drown the flavor but it seems to clump more than anything else??
I know I dont get enough protein without it and cant grab the isopure pre-mixed yet due to no $$ at the moment!!

Hi hun, when you make the protein coffee mix the protein first then add the coffee. If you add the protein powder to hot coffee, it will clump. Hope this helps and good luck. =)

It really is hard to find a good protein drink. I went through several before a friend gave me her old one (she couldn't stand it and I loved it). I will try to make it to Memorial's WLS support group meeting on Monday and may see you there. If I do (if not working or I forget) I will bring along some of my favorite protein powder. Don't know if you can make it or not. I usually bring some anyways...just give it away to newbes...because many have the same issue. Sorry I won't tell you the name of it...It's pretty expensive and if bought it now, and you don't like it, you'll be out big $$. I usually label it on the sealed bag so people can buy it on line...Someone found it at Costco...but it may have been dropped recently.
In the mean time look into things like Wendy's Chili, plain nuts, milk, yogurt, cottagecheese, crock pot stews (chicken or beef with different vegetables) even test steak...but be careful...test steak at home!! Good luck, Brian

nuts? I wasn't sure when I could have them haha...the new guy you see at dr. coirins isnt really that attentive. When I asked him about my insomnia problem he said " just try ambien or something" then pointed me to the door....what the heck?? yeah ill just run out and buy a script only med without you giving me the script...mhmm.
Anywhoo..how soon is it okay to "try" things at home ..like nuts for example? and which ones to watch out for? I have tried steak and it works but has to be VERY tender and moist!! Chicken still hates me though lol

A few things. If I were you I would call Memorial 572-7262 and try and talk with Arun...the dietitian there. Explain the situation and see what ideas he can come up with. Also try Patty the nurse that does the support group and is a help to everyone there. Concerning the insomnia...Most surgeon's offices really don't want to deal with the nonsurgery related stuff. They want you to go to your PCP and have it dealt with there. It's not just Coirin's office, it is all surgeons.
Concerning nuts...They may not be on Coirins and Coates sample diets...but since you aren't getting in your protein you may need to graduate to them now. I would go with plain peanuts, peanutbutter (plain with only a small amount of salt added), plain walnuts, almonds, pecans, roasted soy nuts. All this stuff you can get a Raleys...but big bucks. You might want to go to Wendy's...Get a small chili with cheese...Take it home and try it there. Also try a good quality chicken or beef vegetable soup...drain most of the fluid.
Here is another trick I used early on...Put 2-3oz of milk or cottage cheese on your nightstand before bed...If you wake up and have to pee in the middle of the night, take some of the milk...It counts for both fluid and protein.
I'm going to PM you my phone number...Usually I don't do it (married guy and all)...But I'll let my wife know. Call if you like. Brian

Thanks Brian! I may end up calling - as long as my fiance' okays it - engaged woman and all lol so I understand the point you're making - -Honestly it's good to see a guy who still cares what his wife thinks, not many are like that - I'm lucky to have found a guy that's like that, not a usual find with guys my age either!!

Mixing the protein in coffee really works. It definitely kills that protein taste. We made it work for us by using one of those immersion blenders. The ones you hold in your hand and put in the glass/cup. I would mix it in the travel mugs because you have more room. Just go slow with mixing or you'll wind up with coffee all over the place.
If you don't have the hand held blender, then just use a regular blender but start with a small amount of coffee (maybe 1/2 cup) and slowly add more. If you put your whole cup of coffee in the blender and turn it on full blast the hot liquid sort of "explodes" all over.
Anyway, hope that helps a bit. But frankly, as another poster suggested, just get your protein from food sources. Chili is an excellent choice as is beans & cheese from Taco Bell. I used to get that and a taco, throw away the shell and mix it all together. Cheap and very filling.
Good luck.

I pretty much lived on cottage cheese, string cheese, refried beans and cheese, and Dennison's Turkey Chili (99% fat free) for the first 8 months. I could not tolerate anything else. Luckily I can eat more now. I have been able to use GNC protein powder. (28 grams protein per serving), I also buy protein pudding, smoothies, and hot coco from Bariatricchoice.com I know they can be expensive though. You need to get your protein in though. It is really important. Can you eat eggs yet? Try them scrambled.
You don't need the pre mixed Isopure--I found it to be the worst tasting protein I've tried in my first 4 years post op. You might try an unflavored protein powder in foods. If found a generic unflavored protein powder. 38 servings of 27g protein for $20, plus shipping. Really no flavor and it mixes well with hot or cold foods, or make your own fruit smoothies or shakes. I share this protein at my 3 support groups, and many there now use it daily since it has no taste. You're not alone in not liking standard flavored proteins shakes.
