Greetings all...

Havent been on for a long time so I figured I would stop by and say hi and see how everyone is doing.

Recently, I have been having alot of issues with my surgery (mainly the drop in my glucose levels) and the doctors have been trying to get it figured out. They say my body has become hyper sensitive to my own insulin and they need to get it fixed.

It seems the only option now is to reverse my Gastric Bypass (RnY) and do the VSG procedure. I start the ball rolling with my doctor today and hopefully everything goes smoothly. I am really concerned about my weight loss after the revision or reversal what ever they want to call it and was hoping someone here has had to go through it or knows someone that has.

Thankfully, I have not gained any weight but have not lost any either. They are still working on getting my foot fixed and have another surgery on 08/14 and am praying that is the last one LOL.

Anyway, hope all is well with everyone...........Have a great Holiday Weekend

Rick

Hi Rick!

I'm still pre-op, but I wanted to wish you the best of luck and hopefully the revision will be the key to your problem.

Take care of yourself and GOOD LUCK!!!

Hey Rick, good to see you around!!! Having to do a revision certainly sucks but you're going to love having a sleeve - once you're healed, of course. Keep us up to date on your surgeries...

Have you considered a revision to a DS? Then at least you would get some malabsorption along with restriction to help lose weight & maintain it.
Won against big bad (SoCal) Kaiser for a Duodenal Switch  Haven't heard of DS? Kaiser wants it that way. Come on over & read the truth
Hit goal (Normal BMI) on 2-10-11!    I LOVE my DS!!
My approval process timeline:
02/12/09 - Dr. refused to refer me for WLS
03/03/09 - Vented/whined about it on another board, planned to just wait until next year & switch plans
Let's see what happens!  **updates in blog**

Like Dana said...come on over to the DS forum and learn more about the duodenal switch. If your docs are only talking either total reversal or sleeve, they are not discussing all the options with you. There are a lot of people on the DS forum who have revised from RNY or lap band for a variety of reasons. Whatever you decide, there is certainly no harm to you in learning about all the different wls options that might help you.

It is so good to hear from you Rick! I am sorry things have not been going well. I sure hope they can get everything fixed for you with your WLS and your foot. We miss you and hope  you will check in more often!

You already have a restrictive WLS that failed, why are you going to get another?

If you are having problems regarding diabetes please read the following info from dsfacts.com:

The Duodenal Switch weight loss surgery procedure has seen the highest rate of type 2 diabetes cure, often before leaving the hospital following surgery and is one of the most astounding benefits of Duodenal Switch. A number of other obesity related comorbidities are also improved or cured.

Dr. Douglas Hess et al. [1] reported type 2 diabetics have had a 98% cure (i.e. became euglycemic) a few weeks after surgery. For more information on how DS surgery can have such a quick result see the metabolic effect of our section on the Duodenal Switch Procedure.

In a study by Bushwald et al [58] the following observations were reported on the resolution of obesity comorbidities following the Duodenal Switch procedure and demonstrate the benefits of Duodenal Switch.

  • Type 2 Diabetes 99%

  • Hyperlipidemia 99%

  • Hypertension 83%

  • Sleep Apnea 92%

Improved Quality of Life

With Duodenal Switch, overall quality of life is improved with rare occurrence of vomiting and > 90% of patients eating whatever they desire. [5]

A DS patient's stomach tends to be bigger than our RNY and Lap Band friends. The reason is that our weight loss is maintained through malabsorption rather than caloric restriction and because of our increased protein requirement, since we malabsorb 40%, we need more room to consume 100 g of protein a day. We also don't dump because our pylorus remains in use so there are no food's we "can't" eat. With this freedom comes responsibility. You need to eat protein based meals following surgery to stay healthy.

Thanks for the info but I am not diabetic and never have been (knock on wood). I cant answer the restrictive surgery part yet since I have not got the approval to go back to my surgeon. Hopefully that will happen sometime this week.

Have a great day.....Rick

Thanks for all the well wishes my friends. I dont know what direction this is going to go but hopefully will have the approval sometime this week to see the surgeon. I do have several questions about the type of surgery they will revise too and will go with what is best for me.

I will keep everyone updated as this mess progresses
