INTERESTED IN LEARNING ABOUT TAXES
If anyone in the Upland area is interested in learning how to prepare taxes and possibly work during tax season, I will be teaching a tax course at one of those tax offices starting next week.
There is no money in my pocket if you take the course. I get paid the same amount for teaching it whether there is 1 or 20 people in the class. However I just thought I would put it out there if it is something you are interested in or have thought about.
As a point of information, in the state of California mandates that in order to be a paid tax return preparer you must be licensed by the state. This requires a 60 hour course (the one I'm teaching). Beginning in January 2011, the IRS is now requiring the same thing. The course I am teaching will qualify you for both certifications. And if you aren't interested in preparing other people's taxes and just want to know for yourself a little bit more about the process this would also be a good course for you take.
So if anyone is interested, send me a PM and I will give you more information on how to sign up for the class. It begins on August 31st for 10 weeks. It is two nights a week, Tuesday & Thursday from 6 - 9PM.

Hi Steph! Sure wish I lived down your way! I was just talking to Lon about maybe taking the H & R Block tax course LOL I worked a season for them eons ago and thought I might try again in 2011...like I need the headache, right? ;-) It would really be 'fun' taking the certification course from someone I know. Hope u have a great turn out...just learning the stuff for self knowledge is a great idea.

Hi Nancy,
Just a bit of information about the H & R Block course. The course is not what it was years ago. They teach the course to their software and leave much of the why's about taxes out because their answer is that you don't need to know that because the computer does. While this is true, I have to say I would be concerned about what a new tax preparer truly knows. In a nutshell, I don't feel the H & R Block course teaches you enough to be a tax preparer outside of an H & R Block tax office. Being as you have done it before, it's probably ok for someone like yourself who has some knowledge, but someone with no knowledge won't have alot more knowledge when they are finished. In addition the Block course is $300, double what the Liberty course is and the Liberty course is still done manually so you are having to learn how to prepare an actual tax return.
Just thougt I'd give you the information before you decide on a course to take. You have to have our CTEC license in CA to be able to be a paid tax preparer and starting in January the IRS is also requiring certification. Whatever you decide though, good luck.
